Mark Armfield:
Music has always been a big part of my life. When I hear music, my life has more meaning, more soul, more heart. My mother tells me that when I was two years old, I would sit by an old Zenith record player, play music and sing all day long. I had an intimate connection with music and it always gave me a place to go where I could feel peace, safety and love. I played the trumpet in grade school and junior high. Although I liked it and played well, it didn’t feel completely right. I had this one big problem with the trumpet: I could not sing while I was playing it.
Tom Evoniuk:
I started very young -- with a toy, plastic guitar -- and wrote my first song to my mother. I guess the first inspiration I had came from Elvis. Yep! That’s what I wanted to be -- a singer songwriter. That’s how my journey started. I started taking lessons on a $12 Stella Guitar bought from Montgomery Ward. I took lessons until I was about 15 years old and then began giving lessons myself. I used the proceeds to buy a Guild electric guitar. At the same time, I was in a duet with my best friend Mark Counsil. We had a band called the Knights. We played at high school dances and other venues. Mark injured his fingers so our bassist Steve Swan and I began to perform as a duet. This is when I began to really focus on my vocals and harmonies and also began to appreciate the purity of the acoustic guitar. |
