Artist History
Marty Wendell began his career in music in Ticonderoga, NY at the age of 12 when he sang in a church talent show. During his high school years he began writing songs and in college began doing live performances. He became friends with a talent agent named Jerry Teifer who first introduced him to Johnny Cash. Not long after this he caught the attention of Stanley Rowland, who brought him to New York City to record his self-penned song, "Hey, Hey Mama". Tom Wilde, owner of Ferus Records, played on the session and re-released the song. On the strength of this record, Marty was booked to open for Johnny Cash in 1968. His second release, "An Ode To Burtis Dean", received airplay around the country. Then came "Bring the Circus Back To Town", which gained international exposure through Armed Forces Radio and "Daddy Sang Bass", a Carl Perkins song, which resulted in Marty being cited as "a good talent" by the late Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member.
For twenty years Marty hosted an annual festival, which attracted top artists from the Northeast as well as major artists such as WWVA's Lee Moore, Lew Dewitt (former Statler Brothers member), Bandana and William Lee Golden, of the Oak Ridge Boys. Marty has continued to share the stage with such diverse artists as John Anderson, Lacy J. Dalton, T.G. Shepard, folk legend Arlo Guthrie, and country bluesman T. Graham Brown. He is the recipient of the prestigious Northeast Country Music Association's "Pioneer Award" and Airplay International's "Artistic Trailblazer Award". Marty now records for Orrensong Recordings, an affiliate of NYC rock label, "Evanworks Limited". His first effort for this label, "Labor of Love", is a showcase of Marty's unique brand of "music that makes a difference".
Although he has solid credentials in country music, Marty's music has little in common with the commercial music of contemporary country radio. Rather, he performs songs that he feels have substance drawing on his folk, rock, country and gospel roots. And most of the songs Marty performs are self-penned.
Marty's two sons, Sean and John. now tour and record with him. Marty rounds out his tour band with other top musicians who are dedicated and hard-working.
Not one to rest on his previous accomplishments, Marty continues to expand his musical horizons. Nobody is more original! |
