Artist description
Best known as one-quarter of Canada’s top female
a cappella group Malaika, Lee Hayes is an award-
winning songwriter and a gifted solo performer.
Her stage experience is extensive; With Malaika,
Hayes has toured Canada, the US, and the UK in the
last four years. Malaika has one CD, ‘Malaika
Live’, which has independently sold over 4,000
copies. Malaika’s video, filmed in 1996, features
Malaika singing the Lee Hayes song, ‘What Is
Love?’. Malaika will begin recording their second
CD the summer of 2000.
Hayes’ passionate writing made her a winner of the
1995 "Songs From The Heart" songwriting contest,
sponsored by SOCAN and the Ontario Council of Folk
Festivals. Hayes’ forte is her ability to write
great hooks and poignant, believable lyrics. Her
song ‘When A Woman’ inspired film-maker Tracy
Bacenas to create a documentary of Malaika, called
‘Angel’. This documentary has been aired
internationally several times on the Women’s
Television Network. "When A Woman’ is performed by
women’s choirs all over the world.
It is her unique pop-folk writing that brought
Hayes to Nashville this year via New York, where
entertainment lawyer Charles Sanders first heard
her perform and decided to introduce her to the
music community in Nashville. Hayes spent two
weeks there in March, meeting with publishers and
writing with Robert Jetton, a well-known artist
with several recordings, including a duet with
Emmylou Harris. Jetton will be featured on Lee
Hayes’ upcoming CD, performing their duet ‘Just
Enough’. Hayes will be recording with Canadian
producer James Stephens.
An eclectic writer, Hayes finds inspiration in
strange places. Her show tune ‘In Vienna’ (a song
Hayes calls "the missing number from the Sound of
Music") received national attention on CBC radio
and caught the interest of singer/songwriter
Elizabeth Von Trapp, grand-daughter of Maria and
Captain Von Trapp. Ms. Von Trapp is hoping it will
be included in an upcoming artist’s compilation
of the Sound of Music, to be produced by
Livingston Taylor.
Hayes is also the producer and host of the annual
showcase, The Ottawa Gems In Concert, featuring
the best of Ottawa’s female singer/songwriters.
Lee Hayes grew up in Ottawa, Canada, a member of
an eccentric and creative family. |
