    Artist History
Eclectic. Strange. Dark. Moving. Satisfying. Industrial. Techno. A few of many descriptions of the electronica act Buz. With many influences, Buz is the result of the mixture of modern day bands and the almighty music of Chopin, Bach and Mozart. Classically trained on the piano, Jake Elking has been working with music fifteen out of the nineteen years of his life. Learning the basics of the piano at age four, performing Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” at age six, and with a repertoire of well over thirty great masterpieces at the age of nineteen, he has spent a large majority of his life playing and performing classical music. Having joined the grade school concert band at age ten as a trombonist, he began to piece together elements of music which helped him understand the art of composing for more than just the piano. He started composing songs for full piece orchestras after figuring out what MIDI was on the family PC. After composing full orchestras on his computer, his cousin had introduced him to the art of Nine Inch Nails. He fell in love after hearing his first NIN song (besides Closer & Head Like A Hole) Mr. Self Destruct. Because of his fascination for the electronic sounds produced by NIN, he became interested in newer electronica acts such as the Crystal Method, the Chemical Brothers, and Aphex Twin. At age fourteen he had attempted to create his first techno song entitled: Buz, using a Casio CZ-1 and dragging it over to his cousin’s house, who had a Sound Blaster AWE32. He had the whole song composed as a MIDI file and ran the song through his cousin’s AWE32 and his Casio CZ-1 straight into a tape deck, and recorded his first ever techno song under the alias: zuB. Jake has been around when it comes to performing live. Being in 2 other bands have contributed to that. He first started in a rock band that his older cousin had put together, which he played keyboards in. They performed quite often throughout St. Louis, and recorded a full length CD in Jake’s basement. His other was a small jazz combo consisting of 4 musicians of ages 15 and 16, which he played piano for. They played at small night clubs in St. Louis, and even got a gig to open up for the band DC Talk at St. Louis’ Riverport Amphitheater. They put out a small 4 track EP that was recorded in a studio. After deciding it was time to create something he could feel good about, Jake started work on a project. Weekends and hours spent in his basement after saving up the money for some gear, he recorded the first album under the name: Buz and released the album on mp3.com and sold around 100 CDs after their masterpiece “Freak” hit #2 on the techno charts. Buz is a heavily influenced band. Having Nine Inch Nails and the Crystal Method as their biggest influences, the list is a huge variety of music such as Chopin and Aphex Twin, Bach and the Deftones, Debussy and the Prodigy, and even modern day composers such as Randy Edelman and John Williams mixed with Squarepusher.
