    Artist History
I met my guitarist and bassist while attending Madison Media Institute back in 1998. We all graduated and The Thump and I began a couple of projects that never really blossomed. Then I met a great drummer who was into similar music and liked to rock hard. Thump then suggested that we hook up with our former classmate who happened to play bass and from there it just gelled into what you hear today.

Flat Atom www.mp3.com/flat_atom “Aggro” is a mix of heavy metal and industrial rock, for those of you that aren’t in the know of the latest terms given to different rock hybrids. Flat Atom hails from Madison, Wisconsin. They are, Nick Seward on voice, guitar and samples, Thump on guitar, backing vocals and samples, Shaun Kangus on bass and guitar, Jay Vollberg on keys and noise and Dave “Stir Fry” McGuire on drums. When I received these advance CD’s I gave them the once over and couldn’t help but notice the imbalance between the vocals and the great noise coming in through the cracks. This bothered me, so I contacted Nick and asked him whether he wanted me to go ahead with the review, being this was not the finished product. He said, “Go ahead I have a very thick skin”. So, it is with this in mind that I review this. The levels are off; I want to hear less of the vocals and more of that great noise. That Black Sabbath, early Metallica blasting that the great rhythm section gives us. It’s not that the vocals are bad; it just doesn’t sound like a finished product. I do think that Nick needs to find his own voice somehow. I feel like he’s trying to sound like someone else, I just can’t put my finger on which it is. When he does relax into his own, on a song like “Razor,” everything meets, co-exists, and rocks! The acid samples that are used to great effect, especially on “Hump”, really give this band an edge. I don’t personally care for their cover of the Monkees “Stepping Stone”. It’s too slow for me. Like I said, when the studio album comes out I would love to give it a fair review. But for now, you can listen to this CD and hear the impact they might have on a live audience. Oh yeah, did I already say that the song “Razor” rocks?
