DESPIRITED - S/T Demo
Time after time, I'm impressed by the new generation of metal bands arising from Canadian soil, and Calgary's Despirited have done their country proud on this excellent 3 song demo. Hook oriented black/death metal is their weapon of choice, and I must say they wield it with a proud sense of originality and malice. The leadoff track, "Lord of Hate" is the most upbeat of the 3, centering on a melodic riff that acts as the reoccurring hook. This guitar part is full of movement and life, which in turn makes it rather happy sounding, but the flow of this song, and superior guitar work instantly weaves an ever interesting song structure. This more positive sounding spark is extinguished on "Spiritual Betrayal", as Despirited centers in on a mid paced attack, and at the same time, more perplexing riffs, while never straying away from the melody that is the very basis for their sound. Gord's vocals really dig into some gut wrenching variety as he steps out of his usually harsh screaming style, to get more guttural when the music calls for the diversity. "In Rooms of Majesty" is the final track, and my favorite of the bunch as the black metal side of their balanced style steps to the foreground. The guitar work on this song is more stripped down, and centered around tremolo picking, which allows a cold and sinister vibe to enter their songwriting. They say a band is only as good as their drummer, and if this is the case, Despirited has nothing to worry about EVER since Dave's chops are creative, deadly, and tight. The roomy tone arising from his kit (fuck triggers) also benefits Despirited, giving this excellent recording the necessary level of warmth it needs to further bring these songs to life. I have high hopes for Despirited, and I'm looking forward to hearing them set their talents on kill for a full-lengths worth of material. Somebody please sign this band! - Marty
