Artist History
After playing guitar in various NYC based rock bands, and working on song writing collaborations through 1999, Thea Kearney decided that the time was right to start her own project. In the spring of 2001, she was joined by bassist Peter Sampson, and in Summer 2001 by drummer Ed Ruokonen.
A native New Yorker, Thea Kearney has been playing guitar since the age of 17. She went through many phases in her musical development, from 60's-70's Rock to New Wave, Punk, Hardcore, 80's Heavy Metal, 90's Grunge, and even Classical music.
Having enjoyed the eardrum cracking repetition of the NYC punk and hardcore music scene in her adolescence, (and surviving with most of her hearing intact!!!) Thea's music has developed into what she calls "Smart Rock." It's music with a message greater than "oh baby I need you tonight" or "born to lose." It's not intelligent in the sense of being haughty and intellectually snobbish, but it's not music for the squeamish, or those that just want to escape into a "feel-good" fantasy world. You can rock out, just don't forget your brain!
Like her talent, Thea's music can best be described as having many facets. She has written songs that range from ballad and folk tunes, to heavy melodic rock. Her songs often show the darker side of life. As she describes it, "I'm just telling it like it is, no editing or candy-coating, just the cold hard truth."
For Thea Kearney's song writing no subject is taboo, and the songs are often political or sociopolitical. A sampling of songs cover subjects like heroin addiction, endangered species, alcoholism, co-dependent and dysfunctional relationships. Thea's music has diverse influences with sounds that hint of a meeting between artists like Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morissette, PJ Harvey and Alice In Chains, combined with the subject matter of bands like System Of A Down, Rage Against The Machine, and Pearl Jam.
