Artist History
Monkey Boy, a minimalist trio from London, have generated a massive buzz on the underground scene since they were formed in '95 by the Warren brothers, Paul (Drums & Vocals), and Mark (Bass).
Their self-titled - 'monk rock', has been described as an eclectic mixture of heavy bass-driven punk, blues and jazz.
Rhiannon joined the band playing the second bass from 95-96.
Disco Stu joined the duo in early '96 taking over from Rhainnon on the bass.
August '97 saw the release of the bands debut "Untitled" 7" on Polar Bear Records.
The band signed to Lockjaw Records in February '98. Three EP's have been released over this period - "Monkey In A Rocket", "The Aquatic Ape Theory", "Baboon Saloon Blues" as well as their forthcoming debut album - "Tales Of A Travelling Circus".
With the departure of Disco Stu at the start of 2000, Monkey Boy had a selection of guest bassplayers at live shows. These included Crawford Blair from Rothko and Sam from dBh.
Brother James (no relation to the Warren Brothers) joined the band replacing Disco Stu in November 2000.

Press Reviews
"...bizarre, unique, stop start concoction of punk, blues and something else entirely" - Rock Sound
"HELL'S primates! ...absolutely shit loads of self-depreciating humour and some stonking tunes, means Monkey Boy really do stand out from the crowd ...Punk rock through and through." - Metal Hammer
"...kind of like something slammed together in a garage and then sent clanking out into the world totally ill-equipped to deal with modernity but still armed with enough saw-tooth do-whats and oojimaflips to see off way more state-of-the-art competition" - Melody Maker
"...cleverly structured, tight, driving and refreshingly challenging, right now they're one of the bands out there that really do matter" - Organ
"... perhaps the sole band to have ever paid scant yet wise regard to the guttural, wretched, sick swamprock of the far-too-swiftly forgotten Rapeman" - Geekrock.com |
