Artist History
Born in Hamlin, West Virginia, also the hometown of Chuck Yeager, first man to fly faster than the speed of sound. Judy has been living in Chapel Hill/Hillsborough, North Carolina, since 1983. She worked as a registered nurse in community home health care until 1996 when she gave it up to pursue music -- a chase not fully run down.
Judy formed Muletrain in 1998 with various musician friends and has been playing in local coffee houses in Hillsborough and Chapel Hill, as well as at colleges and universities. Judy has played for local womens' groups in support of the fight against domestic violence, benefit concerts for victims of Hurricaine Floyd and in local Marches for Justice. In addition to supporting these groups with her music, Judy has also serverd on the Orange County Commission for Women and on the local task force for Project Homestart, which provides housing for homeless women and children in Orange County.
Judy bought a 120-year-old farm house and turned one roon into an 8-track ADAT-based recording studio and recorded all tracks for the album Black Pony there with the help of local area musicians including Jimbo Mathus and Kathrine Whalen of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jon Shain and F.J. Ventre of the Jon Shain Trio and Rounder Records recording artist Joe Thompson, the oldest living African-American old-time fiddler in North Carolina.
