Artist History
the unofficial psuedo bio of Joey Mele...
After over ten years working in the music business as an engineer, producer, songwriter and artist, Joey left LA behind.
"The sad truth is that the music business is more about business and marketing than music. I got in it for the music. Like the commercial says: 'image is nothing...' " .
Joey grew up in the midwest and east coast. "We moved allot 'cause my dad is a conductor. We lived in New Jersey or New York when he worked in New York or on Broadway but lived in Ohio when he 'was on the road'."
Early exposure to the music business instilled a love of all kinds of music and a desire to learn the art of recording. Having a conductor as a father put the pressure on to learn music properly and provided a more realistic vision of the work behind the glamorous front, that most people only see.
"I grew up listening to music all the time. All kinds of music; jazz, rock, classical, pop and show tunes, blues, old stuff, new stuff... music and sound as art, emotion, communication. I couldn't care less about what was popular or what was cool or what the radio did or didn't play. I loved ( and still do ) great music, great songs, great sound. "
"I started violin at age seven... and took up guitar at about thirteen or fourteen."
Throughout high school and college, Joey played in bands, jammed with friends, played at church, practiced all the time and generally gave up any sort of social existence in favor of an intimacy with music and guitar. In college, while earning degrees in physics and engineering, he also began studying recording and writing.
After several years making money as a physicist in the aerospace industry (to pay off college loans and accumulate some cash), he made the jump to a full time music career.
He had gained acceptance as an engineer and producer from his own demos, recorded throughout the previous years, and now was producing and engineering for other writers and artists.
"I opened up a small demo studio in the offices of a music publisher on the corner of Sunset and Vine ! Being a recording engineer was my day-job. I worked as an independent at other larger studios as well but continued pursuing a career as a songwriter and artist."
In 1986 Joey placed a song with a foreign publisher. The song was recorded by several popular European artists. The song went top twenty in Europe (under several different titles). Later a song
recorded by an SBK artist was released as a single in the US and made it to #9 on the Billboard charts and #3 on the BET charts.
"But by then I had begun focusing on a career as an artist. I had gone through several managers and bad deals."
The first studio had been closed for nearly a year and Joey took on a partner and opened a new studio down the road (literally). That studio brought opportunity to work on some great projects as well as several of his own.
At that time his music was a bluesy rock and to promote it, Joey played solo acoustically throughout the LA area in the "coffee house circuit".
In '94, as a result of both economic hardship and a general disillusionment with the business", He moved to Las Vegas.
"I've worked with so many TALENTED people that you'll never hear of because they didn't eat sushi at the right place or go to the right parties or fit the right marketing profile or image."
"I began writing this album the week that I moved to Las Vegas. It was a purely selfish effort. It wasn't meant to please anyone but myself. The only pressure was to put down what I heard my head ! I spent over two years writing and rewriting, arranging and rearranging. I demoed every tune three or four times. I programmed allot of the sounds myself, I took full control over everything."
"Sound is really important to me. (Duh, I'm an engineer) I wanted to make an album that the music and the sound were married. I wanted the "sound of the music" and the "music of the sound" to be equally interesting. This is how I started out and why I started out. |

Press Reviews
"As a smooth jazz programmer I get about 12 to 15 new CD's a week and most of the time smooth jazz artists get to where they all start to sound the same. Then a CD or artist will come along like Joey's Brain did...when I first spun Joey's Brain I was knocked out. What a player! This CD has a unique personality to it, it grows on you, the second time I spun it, I used a reference set of headphones (like Joey, I am an audiophile myself) and I was even more impressed...LOVE THE CD!"

..."Lori" has become one of my favorites.." --Rick Gould, DJ KXPT, The Point, Las Vegas, NV
" We get a great response every time we play it. [Joey's Brain]...people want to know who it is and where they can get it "
--Brian Sanders, DJ KUNV
" Thanks so much for...Aurally Yours, Joey's Brain. I personally found it to be one of the most stylistically unique and enjoyable recordings that I have heard in a long time. I am sure it is bound for success. "
