"Jahna sounds like a young Joan Jett!" - cool old stuff.com
************
"NEW AND IMPROVED
First, the improved - The Demands...
Sounds silly to mention your girlfriend's band, but in the past, I haven't
been much of a fan of things Jahna's been inv olved with. (Excepting The
Defilers, and after The Kid departed his keyboard post I wasn't nearly as
thrilled.) Since she'd been getting the demo done and members had left, The
Demands hadn't played out for awhile, so I really had no idea what they
were sounding like. Anyway, she came over one weekend with a couple
different mixes of the first few songs they'd done at ex-Vacant Lot/Trick
Babys' guitarist Mitro's studio. She wanted me to help pick out which
versions should go on the demo tape they used to get gigs, as well as put
on their MP3 page (/artists/267/the_demands.html).
Like I said, I haven't been much of a fan of her musical stylings in the
past, so this seemed like a trip to the dentist's office in the making.
But I'm a *good* boyfriend. (grin)
The first song, "Stop & Go", was the most garage-sounding. Despite the fact
that I gave her a lyric or two for this one ('cuz she was short a verse) as
I drove her to the bus stop the morning she went to record the vocals for
it, this is the track I like least. That's not to say I don't like it; it's
a solid garage number, but doesn't excite me. Oddly enough, others have
said it's their favorite. Diff'rent strokes and all that.
The next one was "Trick Or Treat". Now this one appealed to me. Figuring
out which of the mixes to go with on this was tough. Each had appeal. This
had more soul, but still moved nicely. It was on this one that listening to
the demo tape stopped being a chore and I started getting into it. When
we'd started, I wasn't even happy that there were 7 takes (2 for a couple,
3 for one) I had to listen to. That meant probably 20-25 minutes of
listening to things I'd thoroughly expected to dislike. Well, I listened to
the various takes of "Trick or Treat" a number of times before we moved on.
Amazing as it seemed, I really liked something she'd done, musically.
(Note: I'm not saying I thought her old bands sucked; they just weren't
anything I cared about, with the exception noted earlier.)
It was on "Running Out Of Fools" that I was knocked for a loop. This is
the kind of thing she can really pull off. Deep soul and real emotion come
to the fore on this. I listened to it over and over and over again that
night. The original 25 minutes or so of time probably ended up turning
into two hours." - Blair Buscareno No Place Fast No55 |
