Press Reviews
Duro turns extreme sound to ear candy (2002)
- Local Edge -
- Shiley Carter -
When you name a band Duro, Spanish for "hard," there's no telling what kind of brutal musical experience a potential listener may be
in for.
The local Houston quintet that has been blowing the minds of its audience for several months now is getting ready to release a
four-song demo.
The band, comprised of Jason (vocalist), Gonzo (drummer), JP (bass), Josh (guitarist) and Wank (guitarist), has a sound that
can best be described as extreme. It is crazy and chaotic, but can groove with a touch of melody during an infrequent moody
moment.
The members basically come from two local acts that established themselves only to dissolve into the pool of other broken-up
bands.
Noise and Luminol, the bands most of the members came from, both had an impressive list of national acts they had shared the
stage with, including Anthrax, Nothingface and Dillinger Escape Plan.
These guys were no dummies when it came to music and performing. Their intensity level on stage is unbelievable. Constant
energy keeps them jumping, moving and doing whatever it takes to keep the crowd pumped.
Gonzo incorporates a lot of his Peruvian roots into the music. It was his dream as a kid in Peru to come to America and play with a
heavy metal band in front of an American audience.
One of Duro's songs has a little touch of jazz and samba added for extra flavor. There is no holding back for this band when it comes
to mixing ideas from various aspects of music.
Even the lyrics are thought-provoking and intense. They have a sort of trilogy in three songs. One song is about the beginning of an
obsession, the next song takes it to the next level of stalking as a sort of climax and the final song breaks it down with the stalker
losing control and taking his victim.
Duro is currently in the studio with Brian Baker (Dope, Saliva) and Roger Lian (Candiria, Slayer, Rob Zombie). Keep your eyes open
for its new demo or catch one of its hard-core performances.
