Artist description
Norway's Poor Rich Ones, who were championed last year by xfm (who gave their import only 'Strong' 'Single of the Week'), are already making waves with their new 'Happy Happy Happy' album, (set for release here on Rec 90 through Shellshock on December 3rd) in the States, where they have just completed a 50 date Coast to Coast tour.
Produced by Mark Trombino (Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World), 'Happy Happy Happy', the band's first album to be released in the rest of the world, is actually the Poor Rich Ones' third album, and has already set the charts alight in the band's homeland. Their second, 'From The Makers of Ozium' album, won the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy in 1998. 'Happy Happy Happy' was also nominated for a Grammy.
An extra, Exclusive-To-The-UK bonus cut, 'Drown', the title track of their recent 'All Those Present' EP, has been added to the ten song version of 'Happy Happy Happy' already released in Scandinavia and the States. Poor Rich Ones, Norway's answer to current UK buzz band Turin Brakes (erm, that's not fair - they're far better than the Brakes!), are all set to storm into the hearts and minds of every lover of sublime, perfectly crafted, extraordinary, melancholic pop with 'Happy Happy Happy'.

Press Reviews
MODER FIX:
pop the CD in the tray, press play and ... Radiohead? Na, it's a
pop-alternative band from Norway called Poor Rich Ones. This happy quartet
(now trio) produces rich tones the give the listener candy for the ears.
Very heavily Radiohead influenced songs attract alternative fans while the
smooth, soulful vocals will bring any pop fan to their knees! Mark Trombino
(Blink 182¹s producer) shows that he can produce just about anything. ³Happy
Happy Happy,² the band's third release, introduces itself with a very cool
³Twins.² The funky intro delivers itself into a striving frenzy which
strokes the fire in one¹s soul. Strong harmonic vocals and beautifully
constructed guitar parts bring out the band¹s versatility in ³New Lullaby²
and ³Things to Say When You¹re Not Here.² Driving guitars and brilliant
words drives ³High Flyer² -- a song to listen to, lie back, close your eyes
and fly away. ³Happy Happy Happy² has a very ³happy² vibe indeed, which
makes it such a great album to put on if you need some cheering up. Poor
Rich Ones is definitely representative of the beautiful country from which
the album brings itself.
POOR RICH ONES
DEBUT UK 'HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY' ALBUM RELEASED DEC. 3RD
"Poor Rich Ones exist on that wet/hard interface, where tough guitars indulge in a bundle with falsetto vocals, jazzy drum rolls jive with strident basslines and songs which start like a comatose Radiohead always seem to bloom into bleeding marvellous corkscrewing life by the second chorus… There are gentle shimmies in the verses, there are epic shakes in the choruses, there is seething poignancy in the likes of 'Book Of Friends'… In short, there is a degree of twisted classicism in Poor Rich Ones' radiant output that could make a mongoose smile". Simon Williams, NME March '00 - live review @ Hope and Anchor.
"Scandinavia seems to have it - namely a knack for utter balance in its music. On the one hand there are the freaked-out, beyond-all-extremes metal types; turn around and you'll find some instances of the most sweetly serene pop imaginable. Poor Rich Ones, a Norwegian band now releasing their first American album 'Happy Happy Happy' fall into the latter camp, but with its own particular emotional heft. It's rock'n'roll not afraid to be subtle, quietly emotional and self-consciously artistic, whether it's the minimal keyboard chime on 'Things To Say When You're Not Here' or the steady, melancholic but powerful feeling of 'Drown' or 'Clumsy'." Meanstreat, (USA) March '01
"Multiple layered vocals, a mixture of ambient and percussive keyboard textures, overdriven reverb-happy guitars and a rhythm section that supports the delicate undertones that permeate through 'Happy Happy Happy' … William, the lead singer, sounds like a male version of the Cardigan's Nina Persson. E-bowed guitars build upon clearly articulated pick riffs, releasing into a vast domain of delay feedback and pulses while rhythmically innovative drums take the road less travelled and a steady pace throughout is maintained. Fantastic!" Synthesis (USA) July '01
