    Artist description
Lume, the Nashville-based alternative rock band known for their contagiously energetic performances, heart-racing intensity, and shimmering guitar-driven rock, has distinguished themselves from a dull, predictable musical landscape through their captivating music, strikingly powerful lyrics, and burning passion for music erupting with energy and meaning. "Since the beginning, we've been sincere about what we're doing; we want to make our listeners feel something," explains lead singer Tom Hockensmith. The five young members of Lume- Tom Hockensmith (vocals), Matt Schwandt (lead guitar/vocals), Micah Horton (rhythm guitar/vocals), Jeff Z. (bass) and Matt Fisher (drums)- were drawn together in the summer of 2000 by their creative energy and fierce determination to create a unique brand of music reflective of their own thought, ideas and experiences. The magic of their electrifying union made them one of the most sought-after bands in the Nashville music scene. In a mere matter of months they were packing clubs and thrilling audiences all over town. But their influence rapidly began to span beyond their own competitive music scene. Through their relentless ambition and never-ending pursuit of artistic growth, Lume's sincere passion for musical integrity separated them from the masses and made them a forerunner in the music world. "We just want people to be aware that there is an alternative," says Schwandt. "We don't scream it or anything--we just want to be a reaction to what's out there and prove that you don't need to shout to be heard." In just a few short years, Lume has taken on the national music scene with a vengeance, garnering major airplay on more than 175 CMJ radio stations and positioning at #98 in the CMJ Top 100 in just 5 weeks in the fall of 2002. In 2002, they had the second highest selling album at CD Warehouse in Nashville, directly behind multi-platinum band Coldplay. They've also played a coveted spot in the Nashville summer concert series Dancin' in the District, which has showcased such artists as Cake, Blues Traveler and Sister Hazel. Most recently, they were featured performers in the 2003 Sensored Starving Artist Awards (The Starvys) and were nominated in the category of Music Band. In April 2002, Lume released their debut project, Extended Play. The album's compelling emotional dynamics, explosive urgency and distinct, moody edge captured media attention and praise. "Extended Play is a musically accomplished and highly enjoyable six-song collection of thick guitars and glitterly melodies cut from the popular Brit-rock pattern of Radiohead, Coldplay, and Starsailor with some tinges of post-grunge thrown in for good measure," says the Nashville Rage. The Nashville City Paper agrees. "Local rockers Lume are one of the most promising bands in Nashville's pop/rock scene." The band has previously recorded material with producer David Maurice (Garbage, Doves, Josh Rouse), but have most recently worked with Russ Long and Chris Grainger (Wilco, Ben Folds) and plan to have a full-length album ready for release in the fall of 2003. Ultimately, Lume hopes to continue affecting the ears and minds of as many listeners as possible by presenting them with the tasteful, sincere and passionate energy found in their music. With a new project scheduled for release in late 2003, the music world is already eagerly anticipating this new offering that is sure to be a testament of the bright future of Lume.

Sensored Magazine - Oct. 2002 Lume- Extended Play So, sometime last spring I walked into a local music store and the guy at the counter said he had something I had to hear. He had seen this group live a few weeks earlier and knew he had to get their CD in his store. His hustle to find the CD perked my curiosity, because I respect his taste in music. All he told me was that it was a local band. I walked to the listening station and put on the headphones for a minute or two. Then, in that elevated voice everybody with headphones on their ears speaks in, I asked almost shocked, "This is local?!" "Not bad for a local band, huh?" he says. That’s when he tells me that I’m listening to Lume. Lume officially started in the summer of 2000. Their influences range from Jeff Buckley and Stone Temple Pilots to Radiohead. This five piece band, most of which are all writers, have found their niche in the music scene with a sound that encompasses the stripped down Alternative type and mixes in heavily the darkish, complex sound of Euro Rock. Lume, with a great help from college radio and its listeners, has made it to the CMJ (College Music Journal) top 100 chart, a nationally recognized publication. They can also be seen playing a showcase for the Nashville New Music Conference during the second week of October. Extended Play is a self-released collection of six original songs that all deserve praise. The way the instruments mix together to form great harmonies and melodies stir encouragement to your senses to be creative. The sounds of their whining guitars in "Deconstruct Me" seem to almost talk to each other, while "Head Full of Empty" displays the incredible range of vocalist Tom Hockensmith. In my opinion the flow of Extended Play is like Radiohead’s OK Computer, a small symphony within itself. I also find it impressive that the vocals, over the whole CD, are treated as another instrument, so they don’t stick out and bite you in the ear. They sit perfectly into the mix and add that much more to an already remarkable production. Other favorite tracks are "Wounded" and "Burning Beside Me." After creating their ever-growing fan base, Lume hopes to obtain a record deal that will allow them to maintain their musical integrity. Right now they’re working on new material and hope to have another release in the near future. Lume is proof positive that classy, quality rock music can come out of Nashville. Go out and purchase Lume’s Extended Play, turn it on, and let it play to the end. by Ken Scruggs Sensored Magazine October 14, 2002 www.sensored.com Nashville City Paper - November 13, 2002 Local rockers Lume are one of the most promising bands in Nashville’s pop/rock scene. Their EP Extended Play showcases their Brit pop influences from Radiohead to Coldplay. The Nashville Rage – April 17, 2002 "'Extended Play' is a musically accomplished and highly enjoyable six-song collection of thick guitars and glittery melodies cut from the popular Brit-rock pattern of Radiohead, Coldyplay, and Starsailor with some tinges of post-grunge gusto thrown in for good measure... Lume's greatest asset may be their sincerity. At no time does a listener feel that the musicians don't wholeheartedly believe in every note they're playing. Guitarists Matt Schwandt and Micah Horton build massive shimmering walls of sound that call to mind Smashing Pumpkins (on 'Burning Beside Me') and Stone Temple Pilots ('Head Full Of Empty' and 'Sunburn') and the rhythm section of Jeff Zuehlke on bass and Matt Fisher on drums hold down the fort and stay out of the way. 'Extended Play' is well worth a listen and shows impressive potential for Lume's future." ~The Rage The Nashville Rage – November 7, 2002 This promising band blends Radiohead- and Coldplay-style postmodern Brit rock with thick, shimmering guitars and good pop smarts for a winning sound. An up-and-coming local favorite.
