When I think of Kansas City*** (it doesn't matter which one), I don't think of any landmarks, historical events, or even any sports teams. I think of three bands that emerged from that area six or seven years back: Shiner, Giants Chair and Boys Life. Something tells me Riddle of Steel think of those bands often, and fondly: their EP is full of booming bottom end, dissonant yet crisp guitar work, and just enough time changes to make sure you're paying attention.
It's all executed very well, and as many young bands are fortunately learning these days, the extra couple days in the studio were worth it. Every clink on the bell of the ride cymbal and every chiming guitar line is just right in the mix. The vocals are low in range and low in the mix, but that's the way Shiner or Boys Life would have wanted it, so that's the way Riddle of Steel want it.
One shouldn't fault this band for sounding so much like their apparent influences. If there's one thing I've noticed about fans of those Kansas City bands, it's that they'll check out any band with a similar sound. So if you're one of those people (i.e. you're 26, male, single, working at a record store or in a factory, and love checking out new bands because you haven't been in one yourself since '97), you're going to love Riddle to Steel. They deserve to be the next Giants Chair.
*** We have no idea why these fine people think we are from Kansas City. They are totally right about everything else though.***
