Artist History
The Jennifer Black band was formed in March 1997 in the city of Petrópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Its first members were Celso BJ (guitars, drum machine programming, bass) and Mano Boff (vocal, guitars). In the beginning they had only one guitar, one portable studio and one sampler. They had to borrow other instruments to play. Performing live, at that time, was something totally beyond their minds: they were more worried about learning to use the studio, the sampler and record some songs. Their development, though, was fast: Celso BJ and Mano Boff used to make music since 1992 (they played together in a band called Chip'n'Dale Rosc Rang), and took part in many musical projects that included dabblings in prog rock (the band Lumen) and New Metal (Natchos). So in August, 1997 they found a bass player (Leo Moura) and some eight months later a friend of theirs (Duda) offered to play drums live. By May, 1998, they had about twelve recorded songs and were ready to show their music live. Their first shows, in May and June 1998, were pretty good, though they were a bit nervous and insecure. Now the band was on their way to find their own style: it mixed everything they had listened up to that point, from Pink Floyd and the Doors, to movie soundtracks, funk metal of the 80's, grunge and electronica. The final result was some kind of punk-pop-rock, with bits of psychadelia and "electronized" heavy music. After a while, Duda decided to leave and play for other bands. Jennifer Black then thought about having another guitar player. But that didn't work well, for two guitars sounded redundant and confusing at that time. Now the band was again only Mano Boff, Celso BJ and Leo Moura. The next shows, at the end of 1998, had one drum machine backing them up. In the beginning of 1999 they finished the mixing of the 13 songs that would enter their first album, "L_ve". It was mastered in Rio de Janeiro, and all the art and cover concept was made by the band itself. The band plays often in the Rio area and is soon to have another drummer. |
