Artist History
In the summer of 1996, my friend and former
roommate from college, one Erik T., traveled from
Cincinnati to Toledo, Ohio to visit. We walked
from my apartment to a nearby strip mall which
contained a Coconuts record store. (I'm not sure
they exist anymore, I know that one went out of
business.) While there, we were fortunate to
stumble upon quite a rare find in the budget
cassette racks, over twenty copies of one
particular album so unpopular and unwanted that
it had been reduced in price to a mere 29 cents
each. We quickly purchased all the copies that
they had with great plans in mind. (The name of
the band and album have been withheld to protect
the innocent and the guilty.)
Since we'd never be able to put out a real album
of our own, we decided this was our chance to
make it look as if we had: We had all tapes with
song titles professionally printed on them and
tape sleeves with professionally done graphics.
We co-opted and slightly changed the album name
and that became our band name “Huge, Lies and
Shame”. The name of our album became "Lisa's
Wild Seeds", named after Lisa, the girl at the
record shop that sold us the tapes. We were
stuck with the song titles, so we set out to
write and record our own songs with the very
same song titles that were printed on the
cassettes and sleeves. The song titles acted as
inspiration to push the lyrics in strange and
interesting directions. We made it a point not
to listen to the actual songs to keep our piracy
legitimate. We only had time to re-write 6 of
the ten songs and to record three of those 6, but
it was a fun endeavor and the result was
especially humorous, at least to me. |
