Artist History
The Sock Angels began as a one-man band, featuring the songwriting of Daniel Moriarty. After several years playing Minneapolis-St.Paul clubs in alternative-rock bands, he decided to stay indoors and see if he could make his own records.
Inspired by do-it-yourself artists/bands such as Sparklehorse and East River Pipe, Daniel began writing and recording songs in his apartment. The 1st result, “The Sock Angels” CD, was heard on over 150 college stations across North America. The song “Hallelu” reached #4 on WECB, Boston, and was voted 2nd place in the Midwest Demo Review, presented by the Chicago branch of the Recording Academy (the Grammys).
As he began work on a second CD, he found a complementary voice and songwriter in his sister-in-law, Mandy Walters. Along with his wife Martha, they taking the band in a new direction, with rich male-female harmonies, new instruments (piano, violin), and new songs.
In an issue of Anonymous Magazine, Daniel states, "I like to write about the things that are beautiful but may go away. Things that are fragile or hard to figure. I don't relate to sunny highway music at all." |

Press Reviews
1. --- "Mr. Moriarty's songwriting style reminds us of Sparklehorse (a band that we admire a great deal). The songs are basic and stripped down...based around an acoustic guitar...and feature ultra-cool fragile vocals that pull it all together. Really nice stuff, we particularly dig all the open space left in these compositions which allows the listener to concentrate on the melodies and lyrics. Top picks: "Into the Blue," "There Can Be No Peace," "Heavenly," "Touched by Grace." (Rating: 4+++)

2. --"Daniel Moriarty has moved to the bedroom, producing a gentler, acoustic one-man-band version of the East River Pipe. Into the Blue, Hallelu and Heavenly -- with its moody keyboards, rousing harmonica,
majestic sha-la-la chorus and inspired vocals -- would stand out on any indie compilation, as would Greater Things (Everything has its purpose/You said one shitty day) and There Can Be No Peace, which features lovely violin work from Martha E. The acoustic guitar is a near-perfect fit with Moriarty's sensitive,
Ian Broudie-like voice, and the other instruments serve as tasteful supporting characters, casual and unbecoming as they are strummed, plucked, or keyed from a sofa or fluffy pillow".- Splendid Ezine..........
\n 3. "tales of simple pleasures full of wonder, loneliness, love's splendor and the sublime beauty of the world around him, all in a sparse style that is prosaic and poetic at the same time. Elliot Smith on less Prozac, the earnest croak of Vic Chesnutt and some of the songwriting tendencies of...(Harvest) Moon. .--Demorama.com
