Artist History
Caddy Wampuss is an original four-piece rock band, comprised of members from such diverse enclaves as the dense cornfields of Iowa and the Windy City of Chicago, which now claims residency in Orange County, California. The chemistry between the four members was destined to set them apart sonically and lyrically from the myriad of other bands that spring from this current music Mecca. They fuse solid songwriting (expressive lyrical content, catchy hooks, and emotional melodies) with a memorable stage show that leaves their audiences wanting more. In short, the music and live stage performance of Caddy Wampuss captures the attention of the audience, while the affable nature of the band makes them approachable.
Caddy Wampuss has performed at premier venues such as the House of Blues in Los Angeles and The Grove/Sun Theater in Anaheim. The group has also secured an apparel sponsor with Chromestar USA, which landed them in the July/August 2002 issue of Revolver Magazine. At every show, faithful fans run the merchandise booth providing CD’s, clothing and other items which fuel the ever growing buzz and e-mail list; the marketing aspects of the music business are embraced by Caddy Wampuss
The band consists of Toad on lead vocals, Mateo on guitar, The Governoure on bass and Rob on drums. Toad’s rich baritone defines their signature sound and his theatrical background keeps the audience visually stimulated. Mateo’s guitar artistry ranges from brooding, ethereal swells to shredding riffs. The Governoure lays claim to the bottom end with a unique and authoritative flair utilizing a six stringed fretless bass. Rob’s solid and imaginative timekeeping creates a firm foundation upon which the music is built. The critics always mention the unique, raw and honest sound of the band and draw comparisons to the distinguished music of Stone Temple Pilots, Live, Creed, Perfect Circle and the diverse moods of Peter Murphy, Mission UK, and Starsailor.
In a day and age when most music is prefabricated to conform to the proverbial “flavor of the week,” Caddy Wampuss is a refreshing departure to a genre in rock that is sincere, yet executed with style and precision. The diverse backgrounds and influences of the members combine to create a sound that stands on its own; however, the music of Caddy Wampuss is both recognizable and accessible to the listener. |

Caddy Wampuss put on a good party the other night at the House of Blues opening for the Doors tribute band, Wild Child. Opening for an event like this is never easy, after all, most of the crowd was there to see the headline act, to re-live some 30-year-old Jim Morrison fantasy, but Caddy Wampus proved they were up to the task. The room was well stocked with above average musicianship and the songs were a lot like Stone Temple Pilots, only in a mellow mood.
The band has some good songs of their own. The strengths here are the mesmerizing melodies, most notably "Figure 8," "Day by Day" and the more pop-oriented "Stare." All of their material could use more extensive choruses, because a chorus needs to have more words in it than just the song title -- but commend the band for having choruses at all!
Credit a lot of the group's inherent mellowness to lead singer Toad. His deep, baritone voice has an extensive emotional range that invites listeners to listen a little closer. Particularly effective on "Freedom," his voice is at once soothing and disturbing, giving the feeling that there is more behind the delivery than you might get from a big club experience.
Toad and his voice are without a doubt the band's chief asset. That's not to say that his performance couldn't use some improvement. Especially when he abandoned some of his group's emotional musical highs to fool around with whatever it was that was bothering him down in the stage lights. Was it a set list? A misplaced tambourine? Whatever it was that distracted Toad was distracting to us as well. The singer needs to become a frontman, developing enough confidence in his own strengths to at least make eye contact with his audience. Toad needs to become as strong a performer as he is a vocalist. Maybe Toad was just shy because he knew the audience was there to see the main headliner.
Short breaks during "Fall Away" near set's end showed that Toad isn't the only band member with extraordinary talent. While playing "Waiting for Tomorrow," Guitarist Tucker had already given us a glimpse of his abilities, but this little solo slot showed him to be an astonishingly gifted performer. The same goes for bassist Gouvernoure, also blessed with a chance to showcase his smooth style and dexterous fingers. He and drummer T-Bone know how to mesh, especially evident during a neo-tribal intro to the song "Figure 8."
The band seems to have the music end pretty well covered. Now they just need to refine and polish their live show. Toad's bandmates already have this part down, which makes Toad's distractions on stage stand out all the more. There is nothing so wrong with Caddy Wampuss that a few sessions with a choreographer or a few more evenings on a stage can't fix.
Because all those tie-dyed T-shirts were waiting for "Wild Child," maybe the band felt neglected, ignored. In truth, Caddy Wampuss had more people in the club for their set than some bands see in an entire career. Odds are that Caddy Wampuss will continue to grow, to get the attention, and draw the fans that they deserve.
