Artist History
Avis began singing professionally at age 18 in nightclubs and bars in the Philadelphia area. At the age of 20, she moved to Los Angeles to sign what she was sure was the recording contract that awaited her as soon as her plane touched down. Forced to face the facts of life in LA, she became depressed but was too proud to return to Philadelphia. She took numerous jobs to pay the rent. Jobs that didn't have anything to do with music. Jobs that broke her spirit. One evening as she was walking aimlessly down Hollywood Boulevard, a musician friend spotted her and invited Avis to an informal bible study for artists in the area. She reluctantly agreed. The bible study turned out to be more of a pentecostal service, and Avis found herself standing up... asking to receive Jesus even before the minister gave the invitation. Avis joined a teaching ministry and became grounded in the work of God. After a few years, she felt she was ready to sing again, ministering the teachings of God. She approached Christian recording companies but no one would touch her. They said her music was too different and suggested she join a choir. It wasn't God's time...In the years to follow, Avis married, had three children, and worked an assortment of jobs. In 1997, two things happened. First, she turned 40 and tried to finally resign herself to the fact that ministry just didn't seem to be part of God's plan for her life. Then... God began to "download" prophetic songs into her spirit and Avis was more surprised than anyone. She didn't know what to do, and God led her to "be still" and He would open up doors for her. She found that while driving to work, or grocery shopping, or even while attending church, songs would come to her. God impressed on her that she needed to record these songs and what you are listening to is a precious manifestation of those words, spoken into Avis' heart. Listen... to a woman who thought she was past her time... not so! That's just like God to use someone past their own days of strength so that His grace might be seen by all |
