State University of New York at Brockport: Local Band Brings an Original Sound
by Rebecca Clark, Photography Editor
A performance from the music of the modern rock band Article 9 echoed throughout the halls of the Seymour College Union when they jammed in the Gallery on Thursday, April 19. The five band members came together to form a band in 1999 and played more actively during the summer, performing at places such as Tremors, Milestones, and Annie Murphy's Fiddlers Green. They also placed second at the Fall 2000 Battle of the Bands. The band members include Andy Kompanijec, Guitar/ Vocals; Don Dean, lead Vocals; J-P Altieri, Bass/Vocals; Anthony (Tony) Altieri, Drums; and Greg Wilding, Guitar.
Kompanijec, who is an alumnus of Brockport, joined the band in 2000, and Dean joined the band about a month ago. Wilding is also a Brockport alumnus and Tony Altieri is a former Brockport Resident Director, who now works at St. John Fisher College. J-P Altieri said that he did not attend Brockport, unless it was to party. The band members are self-taught musicians, who are influenced by many different music genres, from pop to heavy metal.
Article 9 played mostly their own original music, mixed with very few cover songs by bands such as the Stone Temple Pilots and Live. Their songs, played in a continuous set, were up-beat and the energy given off by the band seemed to be imitated in the audience. Article 9 are planning on recording an album within the next few months. "Our musical style is a culmination of some of the current sounds out there now, yet we continually work to make our music unique and enjoyable," Tony Altieri said. "Each song has a different meaning for each person that listens to it. We hope to continue to do this for years to come, with the intention of reaching others as well," he added.
Surprisingly, there was a low turnout of audience members, which was a bit disappointing. The band put on a very enjoyable show that was worth checking out. When asked about the low turnout one audience member said that "it was ridiculous, and that people should not bitch about having nothing to do."
"It's too bad that more students don't take advantage of the live music offered in the Gallery," Wilding said. "The audience comes and seems to be alive, regardless of size, for the entire set," J-P Altieri added. Article 9 is grateful for the fans they have though. "We have some really dedicated friends and fans out here in Brockport that consistently come out and see us," Tony Altieri said. "I hope that we can continue to have our fan base at Brockport grow, as well as locally in Rochester, and that they'll embrace our music as well," he added.
Article 9 has a great original sound that is professional, and they look to have a promising future. The band put on an excellent show that should have been enjoyed by many more students. For more information on the band, students can checkout their website at www.article-9.com.
"I'd say that the two times we've been to Brockport have been very enjoyable," J-P Altieri said. "The Gallery, although light on stage size, is a warm atmosphere in the heart of the campus that even the casual passer-by can stop in for a listen," he added. "We're looking forward to playing at B-port again." |
