Artist History
Soul Driver was formed in late Fall of 1998. Soul Driver spent a good part of 1999 writing and recording Accelerate; the debut release from the band, at Canada’s premier recording studio, Metalworks Recording Studios. With the help of producer Graham Brewer, (Tea Party, Serial Joe), Soul Driver found the sound they were in search for. Accelerate is jam packed with crunchy riffs and melodic melodies. Available online or at HMV, Accelerate is a definite requirement to any good CD collection. |

Soul Driver - Speed Freaks
Jason Schneider
There seems to be only two kind of rock bands anymore: Those you hear on the radio and those you don't. It doesn't mean one is better than the other; only that the ones getting on the radio perhaps have more definite goals.
For Cambridge band Soul Driver; the road to their debut album Accelerate has been long, but the results sound as if it's only a matter of time before radio catches up.
"Originally we were called SlackAlice, and we played around Cambridge for about three years, "explains bassist Jim Winsor. "We started recording a bunch of demos and we ended up needing a singer. That's when Daniel (Violante) came along, and ever since then we've been Soul Driver."
The band's sound has quickly evolved into tight, moody hard rock which echoes recent one-syllable wonders Moist, Live and Bush. However, the members are quick out what makes the unique.
"Lyrically, Daniel writes very personally," says guitarist Jason Sparks. "A lot of it is about everyday love affairs and jealousy, but a lot of his writing is driven by the tone of the music. With the title track, we had no idea what we were going to do with it in the studio, then Daniel wrote the words and it became our best song."
The band, rounded out by Cory Zvaniga, also give credit to producer Graham Brewer who put them through their paces at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga for seven months getting the sound right. Brewer's other recent clients have included the Tea Party and Serial Joe, and has crafted a similar crunch on Accelerate.
"The songs got changed quite a bit over the course of recording," says Winsor. "When you walk into that studio you can't help wanting to work a little bit harder; knowing all the great bands that have recorded there."
Sparks adds, "When you see all the gold records on the walls, you automatically picture your album being up there, and it gets you really pumped . The atmosphere is really amazing."
Unfortunately, the band recently lost the services of drummer Quinn Ryan and are currently breaking in new stickman Dan Taggart, who has been behind the kit since he first jammed with Winsor in elementary school.
They hope to get back to playing live in December, particularly in Toronto where venues have been more welcoming.
"There are really good hard rock scenes in London and Hamilton, so we hope to start getting around more in the new year. Toronto
has been really good to us, but there are so many bands there," says Winsor.
"It's just too bad that there aren't a lot of venues for rock bands around here right now"
