Artist History
Formed in 1988, Seattle trio New Stories has divided it's time between performing as a trio and as the backup group to some of the greatest names in jazz. As a "house" trio for such events as the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, the Earshot World Jazz Festival, and Seattle's annual art festival, "Bumbershoot", they've performed with Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis, Buddy DeFranco, Terry Gibbs, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb and many others. Highlights of their trio performances include sharing a bill with Branford Marsalis at the Seattle Opera House, and being featured as the first American jazz group to perform in eastern Russia at the 1993 JVC Jazz Festival in Vladivostok. Their performances on recordings with Don Lanphere, Bud Shank & Pete Christlieb and their own CDs have garnered them numerous mentions in year-end "Best of.." lists and they were selected as Best Northwest Acoustic Group for 1993, '97, '98 & 2000 by Earshot Jazz Magazine. Singer Mark Murphy invited New Stories to perform on and help arrange a recording that ended up being his first major-label release in 20 years - 1997's "Song for the Geese" on RCA records. It went on to become a top album of '97 and was nominated for a Grammy award. |

Press Reviews
"A remarkable rhythm section." Jazz Journal, London"This rhythm section is something else! I love playing with them." Bud Shank"New Stories can define fire & funkiness, but they are just as persuasive and riveting in impressionistic explorations." Earshot Jazz"An impeccable rhythm section..." JazzTimes"Indeed a fine recording." Ira Gitler"...a spectacular trio." Eugene Register-Guard"Not only can they play anything, they do it while always sounding like themselves." Don Lanphere"Why don't other acoustic bands play with this level of punch?...Thanks for reminding us that a non-electric jazz trio can play with grit." Cadence Review |
