Artist description
The best way to describe the current state of kim koschka's music is that it is the sum total of his vast musical experience, spanning from 20th century compositional techniques to ethno musicology, combined with the new directions in electronic music. the result is a riveting mixture of 20th century harmony, ambient spectral sound colors, world-ethno melodies, and modern electronic beats such as drum & bass, dub, and trip hop.

Artist History
kim koschka, born in japan, first became known as a synclavier programmer and arranger in the late 80s. in 1986 he set up the DMS studio, where he collaborated with numerous artists, notably haruomi hosono, the techno master and founder of the yellow magic orchestra. koshka appeared with him on hosono's "omnisightseeing" (sony/japan). koshka's 1991 solo release 'metamusik' (king/japan KICC 4040) demonstrated his creative powers with the synclavier in his radical interpretations of some of his favorite works by messiaen, debussy, bach and others
kim koschka actually holds a degree in physics specialized in theoretical physics, but he has also engaged in serious study of musical composition with the american composer armand russell as well. his main compositional research lies in the area of the psychoacoustically based mathematical control of the border region where harmony and tone color become indistinguishable in orchestral space. he is working on this theory in his thesis work 'treatise on geometric music' to be published in the future.
nonetheless, as a composer, his firm belief that music must provoke direct psychotropic effects in audience without the need for analysis makes him shy away from 'academic' avant garde music scene in spite of his highly mathematical compositional method and prefers to work in 'non academic' electronic music scene. we can hear glimpses of his research on the demolition squad album and on his solo album as strangely irresistible orchestral colors he call 'tone color harmony' or 'spectral orchestration'
in 1995 he played in an alternative band igloo rangoon, where he continued until his return to the U.S. in 1998. his current plan is to establish himself with a presence in the States by working out of the los angeles area.
