Artist description
Jeff Slate has been a fixture on the New York City music scene for over a decade. Now he's in the studio recording his first solo work since the early 90's and the sounds coming from the rehearsals bring to mind Dylan, Lennon, Costello... even the Faces and Rod Stewart (when he was still "Rod the Mod", of course). Both as a solo artist and as the leader of the band the badge, Jeff's style has recaptured the classic sound of the late 1960's. the badge's heart and soul, Jeff is responsible for the band's signature, Phil Spector-esque Wall Of Sound. But as a solo artist, Jeff travels with simply his acoustic guitar and evokes Dylan and Lennon, without the baggage of being deemed derivative. With this approach, Jeff has brought to life once again the most classic period in rock history and souped it up it for the 1990's and beyond.Reviewer Gary Vollono, of the on-line music club IndepenDisc wrote that "…digital retro…" -- the album that Slate produced, wrote & acted as main vocalist on for his band the badge – is the album "that the Beatles would've progressed to making had they remained together. In fact, the production is so polished you'd swear George Martin was behind the boards." In the early 1990's Jeff toured Europe and America extensively and was an opening act for Sheryl Crow. That was how he came to the attention of The Who's guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, who acted as Executive Producer on a series of demos by Jeff.Jeff Slate is currently playing surprise acoustic shows on East Coast commercial and college radio and is planning a 2001 tour of the UK in support of his upcoming solo CD; his first since 1993's "S.P.Q.R - A World Called Desire" and "The Townshend Tapes". |
