Artist description
Another Roadside Attraction is an eight-piece, bluesy-rock unit driven by quietly funky rhythms, jazzy guitars and the cohesive vocal harmonies of rhythm guitarist Nathan Clewell and singer Cari Hollrah. The band's imaginative explorations of light jazz and soulful rhythms are ear-catching, the most original and inventive moments being the funky, subtle grooves of "ESBN" and the jazzy "Nothing to Gain". Group Members
While mostly an acoustical band, Matthew Tedrow adds plenty of electric lead/solo to the mix, and percussionist Kyle Chaufty gives ARA a sort of tribal feel. Blues legend Watermelon Slim adds slide guitar and harmonica while Jim Tedrow and Chris Wolf provide a solid rhythm section with Jim on trap set and Chris on bass. Nathan Clewell rounds out the guitar sound while eloquently blending harmonies with talented vocalist Cari Hollrah. |

Press Reviews
Music is as much a part of the Stillwater experience as cheese fries, homecoming and Cowboy basketball. Mention the town in a conversation, and it won’t last very long before somebody talks about the bands, old and new, that are always feeding the Stillwater sound. Which is where Another Roadside Attraction comes in. The band’s self-titled debut compact disc was recorded at Daddy O’s Music in Stillwater and released this year. On the CD, ARA delivers a complete musical package that is hard not to like. ARA’s music is more edgy than the traditional Red Dirt sound. That will likely make it more radio-friendly outside Payne County than some other Stillwater music. Long-time songwriter Todd Snider once sang about “alternative to alternative” music. That might best describe the CD’s eight songs, which stretch from bluegrass to folk rock to blues. Seven of the cuts were written by lead vocalist Nathan Clewell. Clewell’s fiancee Cari Hollrah, whose harmony vocals throughout the CD can reach out and grab any listener, wrote the other song, “Comatose.” The album opens with strong acoustics on “The Prophet,” a song about living life unchained and one of the best on the CD. “Long Ride,” a song that will make listeners think of Ian Moore, tells a story about — surprise — spending a lot of time on the road and the thoughts that come to mind. The CD continues on its diverse musical road and ends with the free-wheeling “Another Roadside Attraction,” which is a blast to hear, especially with Matthew Tedrow’s rock-edged lead guitar. At the very least, the CD is worth a listen. It should have a wide appeal, regardless of a listener’s views on Red Dirt music, because of its musical diversity. And, to fans of pure, original music, it will be a keeper. -Josh Crutchmer Daily O'Collegian |
