Viva Viv, a band that's beginning to make some noise
BY BRAD KAVA
It's a good thing that Matt Ostrander, guitarist and singer with San Francisco's Viv, hadn't heard England's Radiohead before this
reviewer compared the two bands It might have made him self-conscious about using the thick and glossy, mournful and melodic
layers of sound that make his band's self-released debut, "Viv," so appealing.
This isn't some Radiohead clone, but a group that -- like the best band to come out of Britain the past decade -- knows how to
be experimental and commercially (read melodically) appealing at the same time.
If I have to pick one unheard-of band to break out in 2002, Viv is it.
Ostrander, a native of Ithaca, N.Y., said he moved to the Bay Area for its challenging musical scene. He fits right in with some of
the bands that broke out of the Bay Area in the '90s. He's as quirky as Cracker, as tuneful as Counting Crows, as hook-laden as
Smash Mouth.
"Too Good to Be True" is an upbeat pop song in a Beach Boys vein with a three-part harmony as intoxicating as your first
full-body massage. "Crooked Smile" starts off slow and dreamy and builds like an Irish anthem, with those riveting repeated guitar
licks that served U2 so well. "Green" is a haunting acoustic ballad that wouldn't have been out of place on the Beatles' "Abbey
Road" or the latest Radiohead.
Ostrander started playing as a duo with friend Eric Semo in clubs around San Francisco, including the Trapdoor. They began
fleshing out the band with violinist/guitarist Mike "Pie" Fiorintino, who plays with Dear Liza and has been a guest player with Blues
Traveler. They added keyboardist Eammon Flynn of Dublin, Ireland, who was the keyboardist on the soundtrack recording of the
movie "The Commitments," and drummer Matt Lucich from San Francisco.
There's already a buzz around the band. It started after Viv worked on a demo with Melissa Etheridge producer David Cole.
Now, the band is being considered to open Etheridge's summer tour.
The palindromic band name came from Ostrander's search for something simple and memorable in a market that seemed almost
depleted of new ideas. Like the name, the songwriting is fresh, down-to-earth, catchy -- a stock whose value never goes down. If
these cuts get to the right ears, these guys could find themselves on a career track that isn't "too good to be true |
