Artist description
Continuing in the tradition of California "new-school" punk rock, Pensive calls it's particular rendition of speedy, three-chord, guitar driven music "diet punk." With catchy lyrics that speak to the issues in the lives of kids today, and energetic stage performances, Pensive is drawing the attention of a growing teenage fan base in San Diego County, and around the country. |

Artist History
It's almost mythological now. Every band says that it started in a garage, but San Diego band Pensive really means it. Ask the neighbors who started the petition to shut them down. "I guess we were a little bit obsessive about it, maybe that was the problem," says Pat Smith, the band's guitarist. "We didn't practice in the garage just once in awhile, we practiced every day." Then Pensive took things a little further. "We started playing shows in the garage, too," adds Julio Godoy, the band's lead vocalist and second guitarist. "And we went all out. We hung up lights in the corners, and put black light tubes on the floor shining up toward our mics. It was cool!" Three years ago, when Pensive played its first garage show in front of 18 people, it's doubtful anyone there would have imagined things going much further. But as Pat explains, "Playing live, even in the garage, got in our blood. After that first show we were hooked." Apparently they mean it. As Julio explains "We lost both our drummer and bass player last summer. It felt like the end of the band, but Pat and I decided we weren't going to walk away from it." Finding new members proved to be a challenge, but Pensive is once again a full band, with new energy and new songs. East Coast transplants Kevin Dennis on bass and Chris Delisle on drums join the band, completing the quartet. With a sophomore release, an EP entitled Something About the Stars, Pensive continues the So-Cal pop-punk tradition. But, under the guiding hand of producer Will Salazar, former front man of Fenix TX, the new songs show more range and influence beyond the expected pop-punk sound. Pat adds, "At it's core, Something About the Stars is still very recognizable as Pensive. But, for us, there's some edginess in some songs that we explored and liked. We hope our fans like the way things are heading." |
