Artist History
Diplomat first came to light in early 1999. Ben and Nat had been playing in Rash for five years, and Justin for the last three, when they decided another guitarist and name change was all for the better. Four EPs were released by Rash which give a good insight into the pre-Diplomat era.
With new guitarist Ben Ey on board, Diplomat released their debut album 'Welcome Departure' in October 2000. Another 4-track EP 'Forward Thinking' followed in June 2001 once drummer Ben returned from OS travels.
Diplomat play indie guitar rock (is there a more over-used term these days?), so if you're into bands like the Archers of Loaf, Swervedriver and Fugazi, you're probably going to find something you like here.
They are currently writing some new songs for their second album which will be recorded over the summer. |

Press Reviews
dB Magazine
"If I didn't know they were an Adelaide band, I would have pegged Diplomat as a prime example of quality Californian indie-rock. It's in the free breezy structure of their songs, in the unabashed pop sensibility, and in the twin electric guitar style that pours repeated licks on distorted swirls?"
Juice Magazine
"8/10. It all adds up to one of the better rock releases of the year."
mono.net
"Diplomat make a billowing mess of your speakers with their urgent melodies?"
"Through a lot of the middle part of the album Diplomat pogo on the spot in a way that recalls Ian Mackaye. They'd strip back the instrumentation until it was a chant and then they'd let rip once more and fire to life another unforgettable tune. Diplomat have got that same art under their collective belts."
"Their songs are so wildly successful that you might begin to feel suspicious at how this could have happened. How they could have come up with a record so fragmented yet so loveable?."
"If you value the heart-wetting rush of unnecessarily loud guitars played with grace and passion.." |
