Artist History
Phil Cohen is both a songwriter and a well-known labor organizer in the Carolinas. His material is written from life on the road and ranges from haunting love ballads to gritty labor tunes. Patricia Ford is a critically acclaimed vocalist with a unique gift for harmonies.
Phil began traveling the streets and highways of America and then the world at age sixteen. He supported himself through a wide range of jobs including managing a skid row hotel and driving taxis in New York City. As a city bus driver in North Carolina he became active in the labor movement. Since 1988, he has been a lead organizer and troubleshooter for UNITE (Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees) and directed some of the most intense labor campaigns in recent history.
Phil Cohen and Patricia Ford began performing together in 1995. They released their first CD in 1997, Fortunes of the Highway, followed by Caution to the Wind in 2000. Both albums have been played on hundreds of radio stations across the US, Europe, and Australia. Local airplay includes WUNC's Back Porch Music, WXYC in Chapel Hill, WFSS in Fayetteville, WDSL in Mocksville, and WHRV in Norfolk. Caution to the Wind is available in record stores across the US through Redeye Distribution.
Phil and Patricia have performed in diverse venues throughout the Carolinas and nationally. They have appeared on WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour and been featured by Voice of America.
Phil Cohen's music and exploits have been featured in publications such as SingOut Magazine, Mother Jones, The European Country Music Association, Australia's Green Left Weekly, Country Western Corner, and The Independent, along with local newspapers, television and radio across the US and abroad. |
