Artist History
formed in February of 1996 by vocalist Phil Padwe and now ex-guitarist Zar Fentas. Bassist Rob Dominguez (of prog-metal band, "From Within") and guitarist Nick Spaccarelli (of legendary Bronx metal-core band, Expire) joined up 2 weeks later. John Scampoli (drums; also of "From Within") then rounded out the lineup. The chemistry and energy was immediately unbelievable! Two songs were finished in the first hour of the first practice. A band was formed on the spot. A promise made.
At first, it was 5 guys, with 1 mission... to write the best, most audience-engaging songs they possibly could. It's always been about the crowd with Mercury Bath; from day one. By April of '96 the newly formed Mercury Bath was steadily writing, meeting only once a week, but cranking it out. They played their first show to a standing-room only crowd 10 weeks later.
Word spread quickly after that first gig, about MB's intense live sets & melodic/metal-rock approach at writing heavy material. And wouldn't you know it... a crowd came to watch... and fortunately, returned to watch again-and-again! Grass-roots marketing (and a lot of word-of-mouth) slowly but surely spread the Mercury Bath name, and bigger, better shows came as a result. Ampitheaters, large clubs, national acts, local newspaper recognition for things like "Best Live Band" and "Best Vocalist," all helped fuel the fire.
Fast forward to the present day. In the 6+ years since the band's inception they've hit nearly every high & low that comes with the territory. Friends and family members have died, been murdered, and killed themselves... serious jobs, houses, cars and loves have been lost... venues have opened and closed; friendships have ended and new ones begun. Then, most recently, came the departure of guitarist Zar Fentas after a long period of unhappiness. --But life is a sea of change. And Mercury Bath, if nothing else, is a collective voice... constantly trying to navigate that sea.
Through it all... they've returned, again and again, to write and record some of the most recognizable, moving songs in local memory. Songs about the people and the events surrounding them every day.
"All the songs are true," says drummer John Scampoli. Which may be why watching the band perform them live is sometimes more akin to watching an excorsism. Simply put, Mercury Bath is a live band. Their range of expression on stage is simply astounding. It's easy to get swept away by the energy, or lulled into the snaring calm of a hypnotic bridge (which inevitably builds into a frenzy, sweeping you away all over again). At every show, fans and friends are made... people who'll come around for years. We repeat... It's always been about the crowd with this band.
The new sound as a 4 piece (guitar, vocal, bass, drums) is more raw, more dynamic, and less commercial... yet it's still cut with a healthy dose of the sing-along catchiness that has become a staple of MB songwriting.
To date, Mercury Bath has exceeded anyone's expectations. Even outlasted one of it's founders. With 5,000+ downloads, over 3,000 compact discs distributed, 20,000+ web site hits, and name recognition across the country... Mercury Bath is a band poised on a strong foundation... ready for the next wave of change.
