BIOGRAPHY 2002
Take one listen to LIQUID’s self-titled debut , and it’s clear that the steady buzz on
this rock band is about to get loud. These four talented musicians possess powerful
lyrical insight and sharpened musical chops, but most importantly, once they have
their hooks in, they refuse to let go.
First and foremost, LIQUID showcases frontman Joey DePasquale’s perceptive take on
the fragility of human relationships. He loads his songs with multiple meanings,
keeping the personal details veiled under layers of sharp metaphors. Although the
Cleveland,Ohio foursome prefers to let listeners take their own meanings from these
songs, guitarist Greg Hido will say this about his band: “We’re emotional rock ‘n’ roll
with attitude. That’s one word I can describe the band with -- attitude -- a sarcastic,
cynical attitude,” he adds with a laugh. Even as the lyrics take on the world with a
healthy grain of salt, bassist Keny Clark and drummer Brent Kirby never allow the
music to get dragged down by the darker side of cynicism. They compliment Joey’s
acute storytelling with soaring songs that build on one catchy riff after another.
LIQUID was produced by Ben & Joey Shigel(Switched /Immortal Records and One Life
Crew/Victory Records), in a process that deeply affected the band members. “The
recording had a big impact on me,” says Joey . “Seeing it start from this ether-like
thing where there was no record, to the final product, I guess it’s like giving birth.
Creatively, I think that’s the metaphor.”
Now that the band is out of the studio, DePasquale says he is thrilled with the final
product. “I’m so excited,” he says. “Ben did a fabulous job producing, mixing, and
engineering LIQUID, so it’s really his baby too.”
With the completion of their first full length under way, LIQUID has already been a
dream come true for these four diverse rockers -- whose influences run from jazz to
indie rock to metal to Cheap Trick . Now they can really take their love for music to
the masses. “The whole band met each other through Joey,” says Hido, “and in the
beginning, Joey and I decided that we were going to write songs that we thought were
accessible to a lot of people. We wanted to communicate with as many people as
possible with this band.”
LIQUID knew they had something white hot on their hands, and they started shopping
themselves out to bigger labels. The attention for the new act continued to grow as
LIQUID played with Tom Petty at the Polaris Amphitheater ,after winning the VH1 Best
Unsigned Artist Award 1999.
Now with the release of their self-titled debut, the word on LIQUID has really only
just begun to spread. “This whole thing has been like, I don’t want to say a dream,
but it’s been surreal,” says Joey “We’re out in the middle of nowhere and the
quintessential hope of the Midwest musician is to get that record deal in California or
New York. With a little hope and fate ,that’s bound to happen” |

Liquid -- singer-guitarist Joey DePasquale, drummer Anthony Pines, bassist Seth Hajek, and
guitarist G. David Hido -- formed three years ago and has opened for acts such as Buckcherry,
Tom Petty, and Oleander. After winning the "Guitar Center/Beyond Records Musicians Choice
Contest" in 1998, the group's song "Migraine" was included on a nationally distributed
compilation, which also included tracks by Sponge and Mtley Cre. Recorded at Spider Studios
in Strongsville and produced by Ben Schigel, DePasquale, and Hido, the band's self-titled debut
displays great range -- the group can play both heavy alternative rock and, when it emphasizes
quieter melodies, pop-oriented adult alternative rock.
While its sound is distinctly contemporary, Liquid doesn't uncover any new ground on Liquid. "I
Hate You," a track that features a midsong guitar solo, sounds like a cross between Creed and
Collective Soul, and the raw guitars that stop and go in "High" follow the pattern of Nirvana's
"Smells Like Teen Spirit." "Migraine" features hushed vocals and escalating guitars -- it's a
well-written track that could pass for something by the Foo Fighters. As a lyricist, however,
DePasquale has his shortcomings. He writes obsessively about self-doubt with forced melodrama
-- he sings "On the inside I'm dying out loud" in "Superstar" and "I don't wanna be something/I
don't wanna be anyone I just can't be" in "Germ." But despite possessing a good voice -- with the
exception of "I Hate You," in which he lets out a curdling scream -- he doesn't make you think
that he's genuinely putting his heart on the line. Most of the time, he just sounds like he's trying to
ape any number of semisensitive alt-rock frontmen (think Dave Grohl or Scott Stapp).
