Artist History
Colmar, 1979. It’s cold outside. However it’s very hot under the blankets, car pressed to a transistor broadcasting all over night by means of a German radio, 70’s programmes from Neil Young to the Who, Manfred Mann and the Rolling Stones. Frédéric Pierrez who is then six years old, wakes up to Rock Age.The family ground is rather favorable to the budding rocker’s growth, he is often taken to concerts by his parents. Even Uncle Georges who is quite a character, alternately water diviner and original music instruments creator, offers Fred his first keyboard, a Yamaha PS 20.When he is eight years old his parents sign him up to electric organ courses. He will attend these during six years. The needed time for his teacher to realize the young « prodigy », while brilliantly playing the pieces, had a good ear to memorize but couldn’t read a single note !When he is fifteen Fred sets up his first band, Shakewell, with two friends : Franck and Fred Woltz.Next year, a second guitarist, Alex, and a third Fred, drummer, come and swell the ranks of this group now called Kandy Kane. The style is Californian rock with a heavy pulse. Some important concerts occur, like playing first part of Dr Feelgood and Roadrunners, among many others in the area. The group will also be selected for the Printemps de Bourges in 1990, just before the Woltz brother’s departure.Fred Pierrez on lead vocal and keyboards, Fred Edel on drums and Alex on guitar are rejoined by Arnaud on bass guitar. On this occasion they give a new name to the band : Paradoxe, wich expresses rather well their new tendency. Heavy rythmics have vanished to leave place for something more groovy, borderline funky. In june 92, first demo made in studio and this opens the door to signing with a little records company : Red Cloud. One month later the group wins a second place at the Guitare & Claviers contest and is selected to play at the Printemps de Bourges once again. In march 1993 the musicians of Paradoxe are respectively endorsed by Godin, Laney, Meinl and Rivera. Although this votive offertory to the gods of marketing will not prevent Alex the guitarist from leaving. At this time Fred Pierrez has no choice but playing the guitar on top of singing and the group now a trio builds up a brand new set in seven monthes to keep on concerts obstinately. In june 1994 they records a two songs CD as reward from a local contest, « Le cri du caméléon ». The group performs on TV FR3 before playing at some Amnesty International concert. In spite of all this, Fred who is singer guitarist and composer in Paradoxe has dreams of going further. It seems to him Paris is the Mecca of rock one should turn towards. In order to get the sound up he packed guitars and went to the city of lights.Craving for watching and listening to everything he will scour Parisians concerts rooms and clubs. There he’ll meet famous people like Jose Legall the guitarist (F. Gall, M. Berger, M. Fugain...) Jose Legall will introduce Fred to Guy Matéoni the composer. This one will suggest him a record plan but Fred does not feel he’s ready yet. In a jazz club he’ll meet Sylvain Luc (guitarist with C. Lara, W. Sheller, F. Hardy, Dee Dee Bridgewater, M. Jonasz, etc...) This fortunate meeting will become a regular contact and he will learn a lot from this fantastic and nonconformist musician. At this point Fred starts to work on himself, composing his own songs, taking singing courses and recording demos in his home studioBeing very demanding as to the lyrics style he starts to look for a lyric writter. He took one year before he met Alain Chouraki, words and pictures carver whose writting is perfectly twinning with his emotional voice.A six songs demo is made up. We are february 1999. |
