Artist description
Up to this point, L.A. based songwriter and singer Sara Lovell was primarily known as a fiercely independent solo artist and masterful musician - a woman with an eclectic collection of instruments and sampling technology rendering herself a one-woman band. However, with this third CD, "Coming To," released on her own label - Zero Gravity Records, Sara Lovell's creative process is served with a twist, this time choosing to collaborate with producer Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice, Counting Crows, Peter Case, Toad the Wet Sprocket) on the project.
"Coming To" is a tapestry woven from rock, funk, soul, electronic and acoustic, infused by Sara's exploration of global issues through her music.
Sara describes working with Marvin as going from being a solo artist to being a collaborator. She speaks about emerging out of a more individual relationship with music into a larger relationship with the world. That's what inspired the title, "Coming To". "It's about my waking up and recognizing the interconnectedness between all things, and my part in the dance," explains Sara. That's what much of this record represents to her, and in many ways reflects the type of global community she wants to help inspire with her music.
"Sara brought amazing openness and honesty to the project," says Marvin Etzioni. "She is dealing with big issues, taking a personal stance. I also was attracted to Sara's unique rhythmic point of view. It sounds like nothing else out there. She's groove oriented - it's not just a cerebral album - you feel the heartbeat of the world on it."
"I had gotten my first drum kit, and bass, and guitar effects boxes, and was playing all the instruments for the first time, and recording into my computer," recalls Sara. "It felt very free and childlike, diving into new and unknown territory and being open to whatever happens. And Marvin was an amazing guide, seeing my vision almost before I did."
Indeed, for Sara making music is a much bigger mission than simply selling records. "I feel like we need new stories, new models for how to live," she says thoughtfully. "We made these systems up: political, economic, social... so we have the power to re-make them. I believe our power is in our creativity, and I want to offer my music into the mix as a vehicle to inspire and inform, to celebrate and activate."
