Artist description
Whether you're in the mood for upbeat, rockabilly twang, a gripping ballad, or crooning from the heart, Darrin Stout's music has all of these elements.
Raised in West Texas, he has spent his life accumulating the musical influences that make up his style. Darrin fuses traditional roots music with a current sound, and maintains a deep appreciation for the authentic styles of Country & Western, Rockabilly, and Rhythm & Blues.
Based in L.A. this rockin' Trio is backed by Philippe Aubuchon, formerly of "Russell Scott & his Red Hots" (Drums), and Wally Hersom, formerly of "Big Sandy & the Flyrite Boys" (Upright Bass). Darrin has developed a sound of his own and captured it on his new 12 song CD, full of original backbeat rock-n- roll, as well as haunting, echo filled ballads and a warm vibrato. Check out a few song downloads on this website. The CD is available online at most music stores , HepCat records and direct from this website. Darrin also has a single titled, "I Can't Bear These Lonely Nights" on the Bear Family Records, "25th Anniversary - Bear Essentials Compilation CD.
Other former bands Darrin has been in are, Ray Campi's, Levi Dexter's , Rockin' LLoyd Tripp & the Zipguns, and The Kingsize Rockers.
On the road recently in the South, he shared billings with Dave Alvin, Ronnie Dawson, Rosie Flores, The Planet Rockers and Paul Burleson to name a few. Sharp clothes, tube-amps, and vintage guitars are the line-up at any of his shows but ultimately, it's his music and rhythm that sets him apart.

Press Reviews
Is there anything not to like about this CD? There, that's it. That's the review. Nothing more needs to be said. Well, okay, I guess I should expand on that a bit.
With a bit of Chris Isaak-ish vocals and a simple, traditional sound to back him up, Darrin Stout should be a rockabilly star. The CD has a damn impressive sound for a guy who does it all himself. The credits read that Darrin played guitar, bass and sang for this CD and only enlisted the help of drummer Darek Sanchez for the beat.
The twelve songs on this CD are honest and open, letting Darrin vent his feelings about love and loss and more love. He's a crooner that is just waiting for the girls to swoon. And he ain't so difficult to look at either. All plusses in my book.
The first track on the CD, "Wasting Your Time," is a beautiful mid-tempo that I could listen to over and over again. Or maybe that's just because Darrin has such a beautiful voice. The songs on this CD range from very danceable to very mellow, but not one isn't enjoyable. Track seven "Angel to Me" is the kind of love song I wish some boy with a guitar would sing to me, and track six, "I Need to Know" is the song I wish I would hear while on a dance floor somewhere.
The simplicity of this CD is what I love about it so much. It's apparent that Darrin is a real person, not the image of what the music thinks he should be. Raised in Abilene Texas, Darrin's country and western influences are apparent, though subtly blended with a modern sense of music. What is created here is a great selection of traditional rockabilly songs that I'll be listening to for a long while. The only thing I'm regretting is not having gone to see him live sooner.

When I first heard the self-titled album Darrin Stout and the Starlighters I was surprised they weren't dead. Not that the music would kill a man mind you, it's just that every time I've heard something this good, the creator has either been dead or far from my era. Eddie Cochran, Dave Edmonds, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly; I first heard all of them with some sort of historical perspective behind them. So and so was with this or that band originally, this happened to him at the same time this other thing was happening to this other guy. Not so with Darrin Stout and the Starlighters. The band is new, hence, a relatively clean slate. That alone makes this quite interesting for an album this good.
In addition to my historical ramblings, the music is quite good on this album. It combines traditional rockabilly style with more traditional rockabilly style. There is very little swing, blues, pop or anything else that isn't pure Sun/Eddie Cochran/Roy Orbison style rockabilly. So needless to say, if you're a rockabilly fan this album is for you.
The playing is excellent, the vocals are superb, and the songs are short and tightly written. What strikes me most about the album is its efficiency. It has 12 tracks, none of them containing no gratuitous solos, pretentious lyrics, or imbalanced focus. All of the elements of good songs merge in perfect proportion on this album. In a way, it reflects something of an engineering/craftsman mindset, compared to the usual artistic one. The band clearly set out not to make a Stunning Artistic Masterpiece, (writers note; I've found that these sorts of things usually fail miserably, pleasing no one) but rather a kickass album. They combined just the right amounts of good songwriting, musical talent and wonderful execution to produce a marvelous record. For those of you who don't know me personally, this is about the highest praise I give.
