Artist description
In a little more than a year,Vicki Vann has caught the collective ear of country music fans from California to Nashville. Having appeared at Fan Fair in Nashville as a special guest artist, to playing throughout California with her band, The Vicki Vann Band,Vicki’s soulful, soaring voice has earned her a reputation as one of the newest talents of country music. Yet Vicki has managed to become one of the rare people who is beloved by her family, friends, and fans for the way she lives her life, by successfully balancing the demands of career and family, without sacrificing her values, and for managing to “keep it country” while keeping up with the times. She has done so, in large part, by drawing wisdom and strength from the precious traditions of her country past, finding inspiring new relevance in old-fashioned values. Vicki’s debut self-titled CD reflects a refreshing collection of tunes. She has an intimiable gift of eluding power, feeling, and unique phrasing unlike any other artist before her. she has a soulful interpretation in her songs and it makes her voice unique and distinctive. Her sound is all hers with a composite of her many influences from Barbra Striesand to Wynonna, to Crystal Gayle, yet she remains true to country music’s heritage. She represents a bridge between the old, the now, and the tomorrow style of country music. Vicki Vann was born in Los Angeles, California as Vicki Denise Turnbough to a Baptist minister/Pastor and a bookkeeper/home-maker. Her father is from Mississippi and was one of the original members of the Gospel group, The Mighty Clouds of Joy. Her mother originally from Oklahoma, sang in the choir at church on Sundays, every Sunday from sunup ‘till sundown. The family consists of her parents, Art and Carol Turnbough, Rudy an older brother, Vicki, and her younger brother Rick. They lived in suburban Los Angeles on a few acres of land with horses, chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats, and a mule. The Turnboughs, a very spiritual family, always looked forward to Sundays where they would spend the day at church with family and friends. Vicki sang all throughout school idolizing the greats like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Crystal Gayle and Barbara Mandrell. In the sixth grade, Vicki entered her school talent show and took first place along with a standing ovation of which included the principal. Singing comes natural to Vicki and she set out to perfect her talent after realizing in grade school that she had a special gift from God. She sang everywhere, all the time. She sang with Jimmy Osmond for the Children's Miracle Network Telethon. She recorded demos for songwriters. She headed concerts of choirs with 250 voices, and she even sang jazz standards with a 17 piece orchestra. Wow! Vicki wants emphasis placed on the fact that she feels chosen by God to share her soul with others by giving them her voice. To hear her, to listen to her, you feel her. She brings you deep into her soul and never lets you go. But until you listen you won’t experience this voice that deserves a permanent spot in country music. Her voice is simply a star, shining brightly as it sparkles its brightest glow. She’s soft, yet strong, big, but sometimes small. She’s controlled and her range reaches far. But mostly, she’s a gift that needs to be shared with us all! “I sing so I can feel. When I can really feel it in my soul - I know my music is coming across the way I want it to. In that way, my music will have universal appeal because we all ‘feel’ - the young as well as the old. |
