Artist History
The Emerald Down was officailly formed in Olympia, WA in the summer of 1996. They played their
first major show in 1997 at the Capitol Theatre with The Posies. In the early years several members took part that are no longer with the band. Namely Jessica Marshall, Joel Schumacher, Shannon Houk, Matt Patsel and James Kidd. One demo EP was recorded in 1996 at Moon Studios in Olympia but was never released. Not long after that they were voted one the top 25 bands in the Pacific Northwest by Seattle’s Pandemonium Magazine after playing only three live shows!
Founding members Rebecca Basye and Jason Markin were able to find new members in 1999 when they moved the band east to Columbus, OH. Two of the original members were replaced with Jim Rock on Bass and Chad Williamson on second guitar. This new lineup recorded their first full length album Scream the Sound released in the US on Popsound in 2001. In 2002 Jim Rock was replaced by Bryan Ford on bass and a third guitar player Erik Kang. Now a five piece TED has been working on new material that they hope to release over 2003. In the past TED has played with bands such as Unwound, Hovercraft, The Posies, King Black Acid, 764-Hero, Audio Explorations, Ides of Space, The Vue and Mates of State to name a few. This year they also played with great success at the 10th Annual More Than Music Festival
The CD release Scream The Sound consists of four members. Formerly of Olympia’s Some
Gorgeous Accident, drummer and core member Jason Markin creates a stylized rhythmic framework that both accents and solidifies their sound. Lead Vocalist and Guitar player is the other core member Rebecca Basye. Rebecca is the former Guitar player for the notorious band the Mukilteo Fairies (KRS/ Yo Yo/ Outpunk) whose other members went on to form such bands
as And You Will Know us by the Trial of Dead (Interscope) and Tight Bros From Way Back When (KRS). Also on the album, Chad Williamson on Guitar and Bass Player/Vocalist Jim Rock formerly of Columbus Oh's Go Evol Shiki. The Emerald Down’s debut release Scream The Sound (POPsound)
is distributed by Parasol in the US and is carried by several US and European mailorders. Since it's release, Scream the Sound has been receiving regular rotation on certain college radio stations in the US, Canada and Europe. The CD was recorded and mixed by Andy Bosnak and Laurent Bichara at Engine Studios of Chicago in just four days with no track over dubs except for vocals and some tambourine! For that reason Scream The Sound is a true live capture of the band’s sound. So in case anyone wonders...yes, that is what they sound like live. No big studio tricks here. There is also special guest apperance by Laurent who does the intro French monolouge on the title track for Scream The Sound. |

Press Reviews
THE MORNING NEWS
"ALBUM OF THE WEEK: The Emerald Down harnesses an obvious love for the shoegazer scene of the early '90s, matching it with more modern songwriting possibilities. Truly, these songs sound much like Slowdive, et al, but are far, far more structurally interesting and developed )see especially "7AM," which twists and morphs to utter disbelief and total pleasure) than the general output of their predecessors. This is a band with a very bright future, a band that should push more toward experimentation, trusting their undeniable skills and spot-on instincts. Start paying attention now." -Andrew Womack, The Morning News.
CLAIRECORDS
“HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! The Emerald Down conjures many words upon hearing their amazing debut – blissful, gorgeous, ethereal, otherworldly, dreamy, beautiful… the list could go on forever. The four members utilize their instruments and voices to create the most heavenly
blisspop this side of early Slowdive or late-Secret Shine. Your ears will stand at attention in bewilderment at how guitars can be so atmospheric, at how the male/female vocal interplay can float so perfectly over and through the mix, how the bass and drums can be so smooth. If it were 1991 all over again, this band would open for Chapterhouse and I bet they would be in complete awe of The Emerald Down. An outstanding debut that has us excited at what’s to come
next!”-Clairecords.
LOSING TODAY MAGAZINE
“It would be fairly easy to dismiss the Emerald Down as just another Slowdive clone. At first, I
would grant you that: gliding sheets of swirling guitar, soothing male vocals that go along with female "aaaaahs" (and that would be guitarist Rebecca Basye, who really sounds like a siren out of water), and gut-wrenching melody lines. Very much like, say, Just for a Day of the nosier numbers in Souvlaki. But look (or rather listen) closer to this Columbus, Ohio-via-Olympia, WA foursome and you'll discover a young band way too anxious to develop a sound of their own.
True, they didn't achieve it here, but hey, it's their first record after all, where they pour all their primal influences. You can tell that these guys were itching to tell the world who their heroes are, and by that, they have crafted a wonderfully noisy collection of shoegaze-inspired songs that resemble a a lot the less polished, much rockier sounds of the late 80's. For that matter,
if you happen to compare it with another Slowdive clone as, say, Malory, you could file this as a less ethereal, dirtier and much more noisier rock band that play all their cards correctly in creating dense, swirling and rich layers of sound that build up into an orgasmic climax of candy-coated sheets of gliding guitar noise. Songs like the epic, even anthemic Red Shift, the 80's-inspired Perilized that brings to mind stuff like The Cure and Joy Division, and the much Just for a Day-inspired Another Day, will remind you why you liked shoegaze so much in the first place. But most notably, check out Rebecca Basye's angelic, siren-like voice. Silk for your ears. This a great example of a young band just before the corner to create something that will stay on people's ears and hearts for a long while. On the next album, we'll talk more about this. I can assure you that.” - Alejandro Alaluf, Losing Today. |
