Artist History Don’t let the name fool you, if it hadn’t been a part of them for so long they would certainly have changed it. Formed way back in January of 1996 with their current line-up settling in 1998, this close-knit band composed of five best friends has developed a very serious, unique and mature sound. They are the type of band in which each member stands out for their individual musicianship, and at the same time feed off one another brilliantly. This is easily seen in their live show that always proves to be very solid and together. Additionally, the high level of raw energy and intense emotion displayed on stage is overwhelming and has an ability to completely take over and subdue crowds of all sizes.Much like any accomplished band, Blacklight Sunshine has paid their dues playing hundreds of shows locally and touring both nationally and regionally. Last year, they were part of the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands in which they got the opportunity to perform at the Kansas City stop of the Vans Warped Tour 2001 at Sandstone Amphitheater. They have been selected to play at other large shows like Rockfest 2000 held at Westfair Amphitheater in Council Bluffs, Iowa.Throughout their career they have shared the stage with numerous national acts including Boy Hits Car, Simon Says, The Urge, Soil, 2 Skinnee J’s, Econoline Crush, Finger Eleven, Blue October, Full Devil Jacket, and Modern English. Since their first show providing support for a national act, they have impressed and gained respect. Front man Trevor Hurst of Econoline Crush has these flattering words to offer, “Blacklight Sunshine takes dynamics seriously making their songs emotional journeys into the human condition. They do things instinctually that other bands strive to accomplish after years of toiling at their craft.”The band has also done their fair share of recording and releasing albums. They released their first album in June of 1999, a self-titled five song EP recorded at Red House Recordings in Lawrence, Kansas by Ed Rose (Get Up Kids, Hot Rod Circuit, Ultimate Fakebook). The debut release was a notable success selling over 1,000 copies in less than a year allowing them to release a second EP in October of 2000. The second EP was done on a smaller scale being manufactured at home and only sold at shows, but still made remarkable progress.Blacklight Sunshine’s first full-length effort, “You Make Your Own Self Fall,” was released in the fall of 2001. The band feels that this album is their greatest accomplishment thus far and that it truly represents who and where they are both as a band and as people. A great deal of exploration both physically and emotionally went into the writing process, which allowed them to really find themselves stylistically as well. The album’s songs convey everything from simple ideas to the complexity of the human soul, taking you through a journey of hard-hitting invasions and epic climaxes. The band continues to promote this album, although they have been writing and recording new material for demo’s and will release the new songs in due time. Expect to see much more of them in the near future, as Blacklight Sunshine will prove to be a lasting legacy that is here for the duration.
