    Artist History
Joe Who? Joe What? JOE MAMA! A shorter version of a long story. Founded in 1998, Joe Mama represents four of Orangevilles favourite jam night hosts rolled into one of the most impressive and versatile indie bands that this area has seen. Tim McIntosh, Dean Woods, Geoff Canlett and Neil Virgoe planned from the start, to form to a dynamic alternative classic rock cover band and offer an exciting and entertaining show that people were sure to remember. And they did and it was great. But as time progressed, the individual personalities of each member started to blend into one unique sound they could call their own. The Money Tree seed was planted. Joe Mamas debut CD, Money Tree, has been rapidly growing in popularity. With songs like Ha Ha , Nightmare and No Better, it is no wonder this band has been getting a lot of attention. Their popularity on MP3.com, localmusicbuzz.com and garageband.com, and their own highly impressive and interactive website at www.joe-mama.net has been showing increased interest in the band on a daily basis. Aside from keeping in touch with their ever growing fan base, Joe Mama is presently in their studio working on their 2nd CD release expected for delivery in the spring of 2003. So who is Joe Mama? You will have to check out the CD, the website and the live show and if you do not know after that? Ask your daddy.

Orangeville's Joe Mama releases cd By LEE ANN WATERMAN Banner Editor Money Tree, the first offering from Orangeville-based rock-alt band Joe Mama, is not what you might expect of a first, self-made cd from a local band. But then again Joe Mama is not exactly your run of the mill start-up band. Vocalist Tim McIntosh, guitarists Dean Woods and Neil Virgoe and drummer Geoff Canlett combine a wealth of experience playing in bands, teaching, working as sessions musicians and hosting jam nights in the area. The foursome has been playing together since 1998, as an alternative-classic-rock cover band. They were having such a good time that they decided to "go original," says Canlett, and produce a cd of their own music. They purchased the needed elements for a studio - such as an 18-track multi-recorder and a digital drum kit - and recorded most of the album in the back room rehearsal space at Broadway Musical. The process was a learning curve for the musicians who had spent most their time in front of a crowd not behind a mixing board - but the result is a cd that is all Joe Mama. "It's written by us. It's produced by us. It's recorded by us. It's played by us," says Canlett. The songs are a collaborative effort - someone would come to a session with an idea for a lyric or guitar riff and the others would play off that idea and add to it. "It was incredible really," says Canlett. "Compared to past experiences, it was so easy, so fluid. The ideas really came together." The band's members site influences which vary from classic rock to 80s metal to 90s alt rock to country to blues to jazz to reggae. "We are still connected to that youthful angst and we like to crunch it out and make some noise," says Canlett. "But there are a lot of different influences brought into this and to some degree the album reflects that." Creating Money Tree has meant taking some time off from live gigs - so the band members are itching to get back on stage and are planning a summer tour. They are also working on two videos to accompany singles from Money Tree - one with Toronto-based Postman Productions for Ha Ha and another on their own for No Better. You can catch Joe Mama, along with guest bass player Ryan Hancock, at the Winchester Arms next Saturday, March 9. Money Tree is available at local stores including Broadway Musical, Hardcore Soundz and A&A Records and Tapes and online at www.joe-mama.net or www.cdbaby.com/cd/joemamatunes
