Artist description
The sound of Fear of Math is like cinema for the ears. Their compositions are ecclectic, dynamic, and sometimes epic. Progressive arrangements, odd meters, and dissonant chords are integral to their soundscapes. |

Artist History
Fear of Math originated as a casual collaboration in the fall of 1996, consisting of guitarist Alex Yeung and drummer Bill Mowery. Together they began crafting a unique brand of complex, epic, and dynamic songs. In 1997 they teamed up with bassist/vocalist Ray Mawhinney and dubbed themselves "Centipede." They performed regularly in the Bay Area at venues such as Bottom of the Hill, Club Cocodrie, and the Paradise Lounge, exposing audiences to their intense mix of art-rock, progressive, and experimental styles. Ray departed in the fall of 1998, and Centipede went back to their core guitar/drum configuration. Alex and Bill continued writing new material and searching for their new bass player. After a relentless and frustrating effort of almost two years, they finally found an ideal candidate completely by accident. Tim and Alex bumped into each other, for the first time, by the vending machines at Downtown Rehearsals (RIP.) Tim was playing bass with the Slow Poisoners at the time, and Alex mentioned the band's dilemma. Contact info was exchanged, and a few weeks later Tim placed a call to arrange an audition type-of-thing. The chemistry and similar interests were apparent. Not too soon afterward, Tim was given a pink slip by the Slow Poisoners for his lack of common pop sensibilities. From that point onward, Tim was able to devote more attention to this new endeavor. The three went to work on re-vamping old tunes, and constructing new material. They decided a new moniker was in order. Thus, Fear of Math was born. |
