Artist History
Star Sutra began its gestation in the fall of 1999 when songwriter Corey Post (formerly of Thomas Jefferson and the UFO Revolution), disenchanted with the philosophy program at the local university, contacted ex-UFO bandmate, guitarist Tim Patterson. The two had not spoken in almost three years but immediately set to work on a project—writing songs and playing with every drummer and bassist they could find. A long and frustrating year later, drummer Damon Singleton (of punk bands Gal’s Revenge and Pinfold) brought his drums to the studio to jam and there they stayed. The line-up was complete a month later when the three contacted bassist Brian Petty, a local legend who toured with regional favorites Punkinhead, Dali Automatic, and Breathing Water. With everyone in place, they trashed everything that had come before and set to work on what was to become Star Sutra.
Star Sutra’s music, though difficult to define in terms of genre (some kind of “alternative guitar rock”), blends Post’s darkly longing lyrics with a sometimes lush and driven, sometimes sparse and tentative musical landscape. Their songs describe various points on a roadmap between hopelessness and faith, passion and emptiness, with arrows pointing in all directions. |
