Press Reviews
Local Band Spotlight, from the Carbondale Nightlife: Alternative Newsweekly
written by Jarad DuBach
When perusing the local entertainment calendar, the name Headfix often sparks one's curiosity.
For the record, Headfix is a local band influenced heavily by the music of Tool. People have labeled them as hardcore, heavy metal, and in the one perplexing case they were called punk, but the members of Headfix refer to their music simply as "heavy rock."
The name Headfix is a result of a group brainstorm before their first sho. "We went through lots of different things," says bassist Chris Shanahan. "We came to Headfix and said 'Okay. That sounds good.' We were going to keep it for just a couple of shows until we could come up with a new one, but it just kind of caught on."
Headfix is currently working on their self-released debut. They have recorded six songs at Josh Plemon's Room Twelve Studios, with more songs to come. "Right now we have ten or eleven songs that are ready for recording, and if we do record and release those it probably won't be until the spring. We feel that we didn't spend enough time on the last batch of songs," says Shanahan.
"We're taking a more live approach to it," adds drummer Zack Kemp. "Last time we recorded, everything was basically prefabricated. I'd go and lay down a drum track, and these guys would come in and lay down their stuff." The result of the initial recording process was a demo available at shows containing three tracks - "Shallow," "Between," and "Fake." All three songs are totally badass, and are just a small sample of how serious and intense Headfix can get.
Headfix intends to take the band all the way. When asked about these ambitions, Shanahan thinks for a while and replies, "We talk about this probably at the end of every practice for an hour after we're done playing. Whether we're going to be able to do that or not, though, is up in the air. Right now we're just mainly working on playing shows outside of Southern Illinois."
"We'd really like to test out our music on just different types of audiences," adds Kemp. But until they do, Headfix will continue to call Carbondale home." |
