    Artist description
The music is upbeat, melodic and fun.In a world where optimism and rock music arerarely found in the same bed, this “modernboy/girl pop duo ”is unafraid to look on thebright side.Suitable for all ages, sizes andblood types,LITERS OF POP have been described as an“american ‘Belle and Sebastian ’”,and also “kind ofStonesy, with the inevitable comparison to Ms.Crow ”.Adrienne Young and Eric McConnell met in Nashville,Tennessee in February of1999.At that time,Adrienne was nurturing her solo project,Adrienne ’s Child.Sheasked Eric to play on some gigs, which turned into more gigs and co-writing.Theydecided to embark upon a new, joint venture.LITERS OF POP was born.Their self-titled debut demo was written, recorded, engineered and producedentirely by LITERS OF POP on analog 8-track in Eric ’s East Nashville home.Adrienneand Eric played all instruments on the six tracks, except for the beats which wereput down by friends Rick Lonow and David Gherkey. The multi-talented Eric plays atreacherous lap steel,as well as,lead guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and digeri-doo.Adrienne lays down the rhythm on guitar, but you will find her behind theWurlitzer just as often. As for their vocal stylings, now we get to the good stuff.Adrienne paid her bills for many years singing jazz, developing her intenselymelodic and powerful vocal range. Her voice has been likened to Nancy Wilson,Suzanne Vega,Natalie Merchant and Diana Crawl. Her performances are felt, not justheard.Purposely rough around the edges,Eric ’s voice and writing compliment oneanother. Both are passionately simple and unnervingly truthful. His tonal qualitieshave been compared to Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. Both of these young writers grew up in the South.Adrienne,a 7th generationFloridian, left home at 17 to hitchhike to California, ending up back in Floridawhere,as well as keeping busy with jazz bands, she toured and sold over 5,000 CD ’swith her Gainesville based, original folk-rock band,Big White Undies. They openedshows for Dave Matthews,Blues Traveler,George Clinton, and Medeski,Martin andWood, among others.Arriving in Nashville in ‘97,she graduated Magna Cum Laudefrom Belmont University in 2000,with a music business/production/spanish degree.Eric McConnell was born and raised in Nashville, then moved between Atlantaand Athens for many years. He played hundreds of gigs, also produced and engineeredmultiple projects, while earning playing credits with members of the Black Crows,Indigo Girls, and REM.LITERS OF POP is currently booking gigs outside of Nashville, eager to puttheir live shows through the touring ringer, and continuing to hone their uniquelyindividual writing styles.

Liters of Pop provides an invaluable service to Nashville music - real pop. The kind you used to pick up on your radio, tap your foot and bop your head to without suffering through images of scantily clad teen-age girls or moronic pretty boys gyrating and gesticulating. The kind of no-nonsense, melodic tunes that are as bright and glittery as an April afternoon and abstain from the slightest glimmers of self-importance, irony or melancholy. Liters of Pop's sound, part twang and part lilt, is something like Lone Justice combined with the bright, positive sensibility of Swan Dive. Adrienne Young's voice is sweet and rich, calling to mind Maria McKee and Natalie Merchant, while Eric McConnell sings in a scratchy, worldly wise tone reminiscent of Dylan and plays everything from lap steel to didgeridoo. Their first CD, produced entirely on analog eight-track in McConnell's home, is something of a low-fi manifesto, with Young and McConnell trading off lead vocals and instruments. In a different musical vein, Young will be moonlighting Thursday nights in May at Cafe OneTwoThree as Adrienne Young's Sapphire Knights, doing more obscure jazz classics. She'll be joined by Jim Hoke on clarinet and Rick Lonow on drums, with Charlie Chadwick and Justin Thompson of the Gypsy Hombres on bass and guitar. - Clay Steakley
