    Artist description
a first-rate album which is heartly recommended- Smooth Jazz Vibes.com When it comes to music… at least for San Francisco Bay Area saxophonist, Glenn McNulty…it's all about emotion. You hear it in his melodies, you hear it in his saxophone style and you hear it when he talks about his music. To Glenn McNulty it's not about a cerebral endeavor or a thought process. It's all about feeling… and expressing those feelings through his horn.Even his earliest memories of inspiration, the pop country hit"Yakety Sax" by country saxophonist Boots Randolph, stuck out in his mind because of emotion. "When I heard that song, I was in about the fourth or fifth grade and I was just awestruck by the aggressivetone of the sax and the intensity and feeling in the tune. I knew then that I wanted to be able to make those sounds… make music like that."Years later it was another saxophonist, jazz-man Stanley Turrentine, who sent Glenn in his ultimate direction- smooth and soulful contemporary jazz and instrumental rhythm and blues.Having always been intrigued and infatuated with the process of making records. Glenn has released his first full length CD, "Raw Sik" on Isona Records. Glenn wrote all the tunes on the album and one quick spin through the material will educate the listener to Glenn's theory of what connects people to music… emotion and feeling. It's obvious that Glenn has a natural ability to create melodies that evoke emotion, whether it's the passionate, pleading, sensuality of "Summer Tides", The having-fun-in-the-sun spirit and playfulness of "poolside", or the simple, heartfelt sincerity of "I Want To Thank You", the listener can hear what Glenn's feeling and easily understand the emotional content of the material, even without words. And it's music that connects with people. Just listen to what 'smooth jazz' radio programmers are saying about GlennMcNulty's "Raw Silk"… "…one of the best debut CDs I've heard in a long time…" "…Glenn McNulty is a talent to watch and listen for…" "…a top notch production…Glenn's playing is warm and soulful…like Gato at his best. This is a first rate album which is highly recommended" "…Raw Silk is self indulgence for those blessed with good taste…"Glenn McNulty considers himself blessed. He says his melodic abilities are a blessing. A gift. But, he's also worked hard to hone and sharpen those abilities through the years. Now, with the release of "Raw Silk", Glenn is ready to share that blessing with music fans around the world. We think the world will quickly second that emotion.

from Smooth Jazz Vibes.com GLENN McNULTY - RAW SILK (Isona Records), 42:44 This is the debut album by San Francisco based saxophonist Glenn McNulty. It is a top-notch production with some major input by Ray Obiedo producing and arranging and guest musicians like Nelson Braxton on bass, Steve Erquiaga on guitar, Curtis Ohlson on bass apart from many others. The sound of Glenn's saxophone playing is warm and soulful providing a string of pleasant tunes ranging from funky to laid-back to latin to smooth. Worth to mention are the radio-friendly and sunny "Poolside" and the dreamy "Summer Tides" with its cool synth touches building slowly to a rousing climax with Glenn roaring on the sax like Gato at his best. This is a first-rate album which is heartly recommended. March 1999 - Jonathan Widran's monthly column he writes for JAZZIZ magazine. The wealth of great sax players in the genre makes for a double edged sword for the new artist; it's difficult to create a sound unlike that of anyone else, and way too easy for the listener to make obvious comparisons to everyone who's gone before. Glenn McNulty made a good choice when he called his Isona Records debut Raw Silk because he takes his tenor in two basic directions - a swaying, gentle cool which provokes the soulful appeal of Boney James and a more aggressive slow burning effect which falls somewhere between the dynamics of Richard Elliot and Gato Barbieri. When he's playing it romantic, it's as though he's holding back a little, keeping the melody a bit subdued on "Jump Start," for instance, while Ray Obiedo's Wes Montgomery like electric guitar harmony adds the true distinction to the track. This type of grace works better on the whispery, breathy tones of the Brazilian flavored ballad "Today" and "Softly Spoken," which achieves a French Café effect courtesy of Rick Kuhns' wistful accordian touch. But it's not until the jumpier brassy blues tune "Poolside" that McNulty really lets loose and gets raw and funky. "Summer Tides" combines the best of both approaches, as the saxman eases softly into a mid-tempo ballad that later offers pockets for some powerful improvisations. jazzmanonline.net I really enjoyed this first release from Bay area saxophonist Glenn McNulty. From the soothing opening track, "I Want To Thank You", to the bouncy "Jump Start", to the pensive mood of "Bittersweet", Glenn brings a heartfelt approach to his playing. "Today" is a particularly compelling track, with just a whisper of keyboards - very nice! "Poolside" features a great organ solo from Dave Mathews. My favorite track on this disc - "Summer Tides". Welcome aboard Mr. McNulty - looking forward to hearing more from You Customer Review: from Amazon.com Oh, What a surprise!, October 22, 2001 Reviewer: taugustynek from San Diego, Ca United States Rawsilk is a hidden treasure! I had heard 3 songs off of Rawsilk and decided to buy the CD. All the cuts on the CD turned out to be great! The songs all have a soft, swaying, relaxing rythym. If you're looking for a new sax player with alot of talent be sure and check out Glenn McNulty's Rawsilk. Glenn McNulty. Keep his name handy. That's exactly what I did after being lucky enough to lay my hands on a copy of his debut CD Raw Silk. And make sure you add a copy to your collection. Collections that will be enhanced by the addition of Raw Silk, a CD that will enlighten you to music known to millions around the world. In fact, the New Adult Contemporary/Smooth Jazz music format (NAC) is well known to the enlightened listeners of public radio in Sydney. At 2 CCR-FM (90.5) and 2 NSB-FM (91.5), NAC is regularly featured. Tune in and try a sample. Listeners to my weekly prime time two hour syndicated radio special on 2 CCR-FM each Friday between 5pm and 7 pm will already know Raw Silk, the CD influenced by maestro Ray Obiedo. This CD is an experience. With Ray Obiedo, Nelson Braxton, Peter Horvath, Jeff Narell just to name a few, it had an inside run on success. But how does a debut artist like Glen assemble such a line up? Perhaps with unlimited funds? The production of Raw Silk certainly sounds like a big dollar effort. Or could it be his talented performance? The superior blending of artists and artistry has been captured with Raw Silk, a works that needs to be experienced. The sheer happiness feel of "Poolside" the mellowness of "Summer Tides" and the magical blending of Glenn's sax with Steve Erquiaga's guitar commands listening. Raw Silk is a musical journey that easily transcends the expectations of Smooth Jazz. As I listened to this fine musical work of art, corting me through the speakers, I came to realise that in our hard pressed, work obsessed age, happily there was still such a thing as flirtation. I have to be so bold to say that Raw Silk is self indulgence for those blessed with good taste Indeed, a colleague (Victor M) who was entertaining a new lady friend at his bachelor apartment, found making conversation difficult with his sophisticated guest. So he put on his copy of Raw Silk.. Considering himself a gentleman (and gentlemen never disclose details!), his only comment to me was econversation is highly overratedi. Raw Silk is indeed, a very fine CD. I consider it to be one of the musical rewards of a brave new musical world. -Terence Gaynon Jazz Across The World Australia's only weekly prime time smooth jazz special
