Artist History
Scott Thomas Lowe & Atascadero were active in the Los Angeles area between 1978 and 1981. Scott was the main songwriter/leader/frontman for the band. The band went through several personnel changes during its existence. At one time or another the band included Peter Von Sholly (guitar, musical director), Jim Fielder (bass, a founding member of Blood, Sweat and Tears in the 60s), Dewey Martin (drums, former member of the legendary Buffalo Springfield, now Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer), Ruthanne Gold (vocals), Elaine Kolbe (vocals, keyboards), Sean Riley (bass, future founding member of Benedict Arnold & The Traitors), Brad Frost (guitar, vocals, future member of The Hundredth Monkey), Tim Kummerow (drums, special vocals, future founding member of Benedict Arnold & The Traitors and The Hundredth Monkey) and Fred Allen (drums, of the band Fresh) . The band was a popular draw at the Blind Pig in Hollywood around 1978 as the punk scene was starting to take hold in L.A. They appeared on the ABC television program "The Gong Show," (produced and hosted by Chuck Barris), and performed their novelty country-western satire song "It's Big," which got them a perfect score of 30 points, and tied them for the Grand Prize. Unfortunately, the panel of judges (Jaye P. Morgan, George "Goober Pyle" Lindsay, and Pat McCormick) chose as winners the "serious" folk duo who had performed a respectful version of a John Denver song (or something like it).The band also played live at a California Youth Authority Prison and, in what proved to be a completely surreal experience, the Atascadero, CA, State Prison For The Criminally Insane (!!), where the audience of 500 criminally insane murderers, rapists, molesters, cannibals and you-name-it, went totally NUTS during the band's performance. The band members all eventually went on to form other bands, start careers, have families, etc., but mostly stay in touch with one another. Scott has appeared in dozens of motion pictures, including the hilarious Las Vegas Casino scene in the first Austin Powers movie (involving Tom Arnold and Mike Myers, with Scott as the blind washroom attendant). Scott is also an accomplished artist, and has once again started writing new song lyrics, so there may be more yet to com |
