Artist description
In the world of uilleann piping tradition counts for much and Néillidh Mulligan comes from within the great tradition of piping. His father, the noted Leitrim piper and fiddle-player, Tom Mulligan, first buckled his set on Néillidh as an 11 year old and gave him lessons. A pupil of Leo Rowsome and inspired by Séamus Ennis he learned his music in the old way - the way in which craft was transformed into art - 'seven years learning, seven years practising and seven years playing'. Néillidh Mulligan is a noted solo performer whose performances are charactarised by the verve and dexterity of his playing, allied to the sense of feeling and warmth he brings to the music. His music evokes memories of the great piping world he was grounded in - of Leo Rowsome, Séamus Ennis and Tommy Reck and of pipers whose playing we have never heard. He draws inspiration from the sean-nós tradition he venerates, playing airs from the singing of Seosamh Ó hÉanaí, Darach Ó Catháin and Seán Ach Dhonncha. |
