Artist History
Solo artist Jeffrey Smith combines classically trained technique with grittyrock-band experience to create a nuanced style on bass guitar. His soundcombines Brian Eno and Daniel Lanios-inspired melodies over ambient textureslike that of Mogwai and Yume Bitsu. Jeffrey achieves a certain raw emotionwithin a hypnotic atmosphere by layering orchestrated effects andimprovisational phrases.Jeffrey graduated from Cumberland College in 1995 with a Bachelors of Music, then moved to Nashville where he recorded and performed withalternative rock band, The Evinrudes. In 1998, he relocated to Louisvilleand formed his own band, Dharmachine. The group, including guitarist JoshHawkins, drummer Corey Siegle and vocalist Joseph Stucker, recorded twocritically acclaimed records: the 1999 EP Bang! and the 2000 LP Ride theClean Fuel. Dharmachine continue to tour regionally, playing a signaturebrand of space-style rock.Jeffrey’s solo works began by chance when Mikelle Bruzina, a LouisvilleBallet dancer and choreographer, commissioned him to write a piece for oneof her works. Solo for Two was choreographed to Jeffrey’s Frenzy in 1998.The music was performed live on bass guitar at the Choreographers’ Showcase. In 2001, Louisville Ballet dancer Delilah Smith commissioned him for anotherchoreographic work. This time, Jeffrey composed Muse using cello and bassand various underlying effects. This became part of a dance trilogy,Memories of Green, and was performed with Louisville Ballet’s 2000-01season.Jeffrey is currently writing and recording his debut solo album with somevery special guests slated to contribute to this effort. Not only will thealbum showcase Jeffrey’s skills on the bass, it will also reveal a talentfor a wide span of instrumentation, as well as production and composition.Jeffrey looks forward to performing his solo works live and plans to book aregional tour at the album’s completion. |

Press Reviews
Jeffrey Smith can play — no two ways about it. His usual gig is as bassist for Dharmachine (a Louisville-based band whom this writer knows next-to-nothing about), but Smith is more than capable of single-handedly holding the field against all comers. He has the physical presence and technical skills to hold your attention, even as his strange and hypnotic bass-plucking lulls you into a state of near-REM dreaminess. The type of aural experiments he presented during his solo performances could be thrown into the Ambient trash bin, but that would be too easy. No, what Jeffrey presents is another kettle of fish. It’s loud but quiet, fierce but lazy. Who knows what the hell it is? It’s fun to listen to and the Rudyard Kipling was the perfect venue for its presentation. The mood was relaxed without being oppressively so, and the crowd seemed genuinely interested in what was coming out of the speakers. This itself is a rare thing in this town, where any act below 10,000 decibels is invariably drowned out by the Old Schoolers, who have always been more interested in Mayhem and Drama than music. Fortunately, Smith drew a crowd of respectful and genuinely interested listeners. - Sean Garrison, Louisville Eccentric Observer |
