Press Reviews
Recognize, the long awaited second release from San Luis Obispo's funk, hip-hop, jazz and groove project The Rise, boasts 15 newly recorded tracks of ascending creativity and imaginative overlapping construction. Each diverse song slides into the next, bridging separations and building anticipation for the following sound. The Rise reaches and combines all kinds of musical tastes. "Influence II" (a follow up to the homage-paying original "Influence" from the first CD) begins with a sunset porch blues harmonica and acoustic slide guitar duet, blends into an improvisational jazz trio jam and culminates in a playground hip-hop beat with glib lyrics full of gratitude for artists such as Bob Marley, G-Love, Nas and R.L Burnside. "Lifted", a re-enactment of a band skydiving experience, thrashes through a minute and a half of hard-core snare shots, rapid-fire vocals and guitar slashes over an intense homemade single-stringed s! ! tick line running through an antique distortion pedal. Five-bar hip-hop innovation "Verbal Attack" commands attention to its intricate and detailed rhyme pattern. The Rise urges against stealing styles from others and supporting those who do in "Secondary Logic," a soothing journey that compares selling crack to stealing songs and climaxes in a completely original tonal and rhythmic guitar message. "Music on the Mind" stresses the levels of involvement Rise members have in their personal musical addictions in a bouncing slap line and snare-powered verse that transforms into a funky chorus completed with a space-aged wah-pedaled keyboard line and solo. This album belongs in every music collection. |
