    Press Reviews
A Critical Analysis of Raze it Up By Johnny Tomkins - LA Times In music, as in most other facets of media, patience is an unobtainable virtue. Many young groups cannot survive under the immense pressure placed upon them by the recording industry to produce tangible music as fast as possible. The philosophy of "More Music Sells" has nearly blackened the age-old tradition of creative artistry in the song business. Amidst this war-like environment that the Music Industry continuously perpetuates, survivors are few and far between. Dragon Beets is one of the few. Following the triple-platinum success of their debut album Tiger Style, Dragon Beets withdrew from the public eye, and made their location as much of a mystery as their future. Their latest offering Raze It Up, the title track from their upcoming LP, has turned the Hip-Hop world on its head. So drop down, tune in, and prepare to raze up with the reborn kings of Hip-Hop. "The first official title we had for the track was 'Song Long as Fuck'", says Worldwide, who wrote the music for Raze It Up. "Chief came to me with an idea to cover [Wu-Tang Clan's] Triumph. I told him 'I'll do ya one better.' I went to work that night." When SlideyNeez emerged from the caverns of the Lair, he had written a track that would eventually extend beyond the 12-minute mark. Chief was brought in to advise. "When I first heard the track, I thought Worldwide had lost his damn mind. I mean, this motherfucker gonna produce a 12 minute track? Shit, we only had two members at the time!", explains Professor Mack, who assisted Milson Wilson in the final mix of the track. After a weeklong session of plotting the order and form of the song, Dragon Beets began recording. And that brings us to today, nearly 1 year after the song's conception, as Raze It Up is finally printed for a global release. In the past 11 months, Worldwide and Chief Hott Stixx have been polishing this near-perfect gem daily; constantly tweaking and modifying, searching for that golden sound. And now, on a rainy day in late April, Dragon Beets has finally found it. Amid ancient Chinese drums, a prophecy sets the song in motion: "I know Shaolin Kung-Fu has never been learned by my people, but they time's come for them to start learning." It's not long before R.P. McMurphy's voice penetrates the unblinking beat with "Raze em up." The intro builds, the scratching begins, and the new age of Dragon Beets dawns. Professor Mack comes out of the gates just looking for a fight. He spins a sordid tale of the rise of Dragon Beets with a non-stop assault of all things rhythmic. He slashes through your system with "Please raze it up and listen to the beat drop / Chief Hotts tellin fables like fuckin Aesop." Clinching the verse with "Raze it up, Dragon Beets, just another milestone", Chief sets the tone early that this is not like anything you've ever heard before, or ever will again. Back from the dead, no longer M.I.A., The DZA ducks and dodges through a hail of bullets to spit megatron rhymes for the second verse. "Footloose like Kevin Bacon, I'm a stop to all the fakin / I'm a lyrical chef, I'm in the kitchen shakin bakin." Words flow from places we only dreamed existed as DJ Sniper resumes his role as Teacher/MC. His flow, both refreshing and dangerous, continues unabated through 32 bars of a surreal nightmare. In describing the style of Milson Wilson, Jay-Z may have said it best with "Lights out, NIGGA!!!" Uncle Milson sets the entire galaxy ablaze with his brutal, terrifying lyrics. So raw and uncontrolled is his style, that even his own band mates have to stop him mid-verse and ask "Yo Worldwide what the fuck you do that for?". SlideyNeez's response: "Fun". His dark, demonic rhymes are classic Milson; with no regard for 'rhyming rules', he cuts a swath over, under, and through all lyrical boundaries. In a cookie-cutter world, Milson Wilson uses his Raven to cut the shit by hand. The longest chorus to date commences with a full-on battle-call of "Raze it up motherfucker, WHAT WHAT, Raze it up / Dragon Beets up in this and we don't give a fuck!" Slidey and the Chief slither their way through a 16 bar salute to all things DB, and Dolla Billz breaks the string with "We the bomb nowadays!" The chorus is the epitome of Dragon Beets; written by Milson Wilson, and complete with the rhymes that you'll find yourself repeating for weeks on end. The chorus builds, crests, then explodes. Emerging from the chaos and madness is Dolla Billz, who commands, "Alright motherfuckers listen up, it's me / It's the D-O double L-A B-I double L-Z". Billz slinks his way through his verse like a snake in the grass, all the while demanding the listener pay attention to his prophetic rhymes. In sharp contrast to the violent, dreadful lyrics of SlideyNeez, Geezus Khrist keeps his message a mystery, as his tone dances between chill and omnipresent. Forever doomed to be the bridesmaid but never the bride, Billz plays the role of special guest like a pro, as he lays the pavement for the remaining 3 lyricists to ride in on. Word travels fast in the underground, and the word that was being spread about DJ B-robe was not encouraging for those who consider themselves hardcore DB fans. DJ B-robe: Gone Straight? Reports from sources close to B-robe tell the tale of a man settled into the 9-5 world, with his Hip-Hop days clearly behind him. But, as he asks right off the bat in his titanic verse, "Now who's this comin in?", DJ B-robe steps right back into the spotlight as the top "porno-core" rapper of the new millennium. He draws on personal experience and commonly held sentiments as he dishes some of the dirtiest lines to date. This articulate-yet-dirty style is B-robe's calling card, and he spits the filth like we know only he can. Gone Straight? Well, if by 'straight' you are referring to an unquenchable thirst to degrade all things female, then B-robe is a virtual arrow these days. What follows DJ B-robe's verse can only be described to the uneducated listener as a true musical miracle. 16 bars of building suspense, featuring a relentless beat and an ominous chorus of singers, lead the listener even deeper, until they are confronted with yet another 16 bars. The second half of this indescribable bridge plunges into a realm that has gone undiscovered by Hip-Hop in the past. A full string orchestra sweeps through a driving beat, as samples and scratches do constant battle with cryptic piano chords. The beat never backs down, only builds on its own power, until it can take no more, and topples with magnificent destruction. Dragon Beets has never been known to be monotone, and the newest member, T-Bomb, adds to the ever-changing lyrical melting pot with his challenging, unique style. Out of pure mayhem, T-Bomb stomps his way to the mic and proceeds to start layin people down like Jim Jones. His rhymes are busy, distinct, and all-together original to provide a form completely unheard previously in Hip-Hop. Case in point: "Playa haters try to creep like mice / Punk-ass hoes can't stop this verbal Jerry Rice". T-Bomb provides the guest appearance of a lifetime, and leaves a permanent mark on Raze It Up. Devout Dragon Beets fans will often cite the track Dark Journey among the top Hip-Hop tracks of all time. A golden nugget buried in the tail end of Tiger Style, Dark Journey featured the debut of DJ Jiminy, who instantly became one of Hip-Hop's hottest new names. Though Dragon Beets has continued to blaze ahead, fans were never treated to the DJ Jiminy solo material that Dark Journey hinted at. Fear not, loyal DB fans, because DJ Jiminy hits the ground running in his comeback performance which caps and seals the greatest rap song of all time. Right out of the starting block, Jimmy's presence is felt around the world; "Grab my Shaolin Sword and I'm slashin muthafuckas / DJ Jiminy fuckin murderin punk suckas". His lyrics stray from the ultraviolence of Dark Journey, as he ignites flares with quick, fear-invoking, unstoppable rhymes. It isn't until just now that the listener realizes what pure genius this was: to put the rappers in this specific order to allow them to play off one another's styles, and allow the uncompromising style of DJ Jiminy to leave the final "Fuck You" tattooed on your forehead. So how does this song impact the world of Hip-Hop? To quote Dragon Beets, the bar is now razed. Rappers now have to battle in the arena of the 12-minute song, something few are prepared to face up to. Whatever the future holds for Dragon Beets, and whatever impact their album may have on the music industry, nobody can deny that this is the best song ever recorded. At 12 minutes, 13 seconds, the track is nearly twice the length of Wu-Tang Clan's Triumph. Cover it? Yeah, they just did...
