Artist History
Older readers of this bio might recall that Zabriskie Point was a movie released in 1970 that developed something of a cult status. Others may be aware of the fact that it is the name of a spot in the American desert. What is probably less well-known is that Zabriskie Point is also the name of one of the most talented and creative bands to hit the pop scene in recent years.
The trio was formed by a charismatic guy named Cedric ‘’Zabriskie’’ Zeller. Not much is known about his background apart from the fact hat he is a Swiss guy who came to New York City in the early 1980s intending to study art history.
It didn’t take long for Cedric to discover that hanging out in night clubs and grooving to Club-Beats, hip-hop and rap was much more his scenes than pouring over dusty tomes at University. Which explains why he decided to pack in his studies and drop out - much to the consternation of his Mom and Dad.
Although music has always played a central role in his life as a keyboard player and passionate listener, it wasn’t until 1992 that he discovered the full extend of his musical talent.
The irony of it all is that he found his way into his own career by helping someone else - a black singer by the name of Mercedes Olaja King from Brooklyn - get her own career rolling. He had already met her a couple of times in the Eighties and has been impressed by the power of her vocals. A few years later, in 1991, their paths crossed again, but this time she was a shadow of her former self, seriously ill and toughing out and existence on the streets of Brooklyn. Cedric immediately took steps to get her into rehabilitation. When she emerged, healthy and revitalized, in 1994, she moved to Philadelphia where they teamed up with Jamal Jones, a multitalented R&B vocalist. As Mercedes says, ‘’I can’t say how much I respect and love Cedric as a person; his powerful and positive personality were an inspiration to me.’’
Later that same year, Cedric formed ZABRISKIE POINT. But unlike most other groups, he developed an entirely new style all of his own. Cedric Zeller produced many of the tracks in a tiny studio in the basement of his apartment and the two singers, Mercedes and Jamal, expanded his futuristic sounds with some wonderful melodies and soulful vocals. In 1998 they finished off the recordings at the legendary SIGMA SOUND studios in Philadelphia. Working together, they have succeeded in taking underground music to another level. ZABRISKIE POINT’s style is a unique mix of R&B, European beats, hip-hop and pop.
ZABRISKIE POINT’s Single ‘’Give It Up’’ is scheduled for release on the 1st of April 1999 on WARNER.
